Got a Tip?

Blumhouse Hires Zoe Lister-Jones To Helm Remake Of ’90s Cult Classic ‘The Craft’

Remember that whole “Jason Blum doesn’t hire women to direct horror films” controversy? Well, it appears that maybe he learned from his stupid remarks and has taken a step in the right direction. According to Deadline, Blum and his Blumhouse Productions banner have hired a female director to helm a remake of the cult-classic ‘90s film, “The Craft.”

The report says that “Band Aid” helmer, Zoe Lister-Jones, has been brought on to write and direct the upcoming remake of the film about teenage witches. For those not familiar with the 1996 movie, starring Robin Tunney, Fairuza Balk, Neve Campbell, Rachel TrueChristine Taylor and Skeet Ulrich (How ‘90s is that?!), the film is a classic tale of a new girl at a high school that is just trying to fit in. And in doing so, she becomes the newest member in a coven of witches that use their powers for personal gain. Of course, horrific consequences ensue.

The film was fairly popular in the ‘90s, but has grown into a cult favorite in recent years with a whole new generation of disaffected youth. It makes sense that Blumhouse, who struck gold with last year’s “Halloween,” would take on another fan-favorite film and give it the 21st-century treatment.

Lister-Jones, as mentioned, is probably best known for her most recent film, 2017’s Sundance film “Band Aid.” She is also the creator of the new ABC series “Woman Up,” as well as an accomplished actress in her own right.

No release date has been announced, but considering the Blumhouse tradition of micro-budgets and short production schedules, we could be looking at a fairly quick turnaround time once casting begins.
