Another Oscar player in the mix? With Peter Berg‘s “Lone Survivorgetting a late season contending run, Universal is certainly hoping the film has a chance at getting a little awards season boost, and if the true story captures the attention of audiences and voters, you never know.

Certainly, the cast is pretty solid with total bros Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, Ben Foster, Emile Hirsch and Eric Bana starring in the movie, which is based on the 2005 incident that found Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell and his team under attack from Taliban forces in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan. The team was on a mission to kill a terrorist leader very close to Osama Bin Laden, and along the way they ran into three kids and an old man, who under the rules of engagement they could have killed. They let them go, and the team suddenly found themselves under fire from 250 heavily armed Al Qaeda soldiers.

The big selling point of the film is the brotherhood and bond between the men, though it doesn’t skimp on the explosions and blood either. If Berg can get the tone right, it could be a contender, but as always, it’s a long, long way to Oscar and anything can happen.

“Lone Survivor” opens in New York and Los Angeles on December 27th and nationwide on January 10, 2014. Watch below. [Moviefone]

  1. Any awards hopes it might have had it just shot itself in the foot with this trailer. The cast is solid, but it looks incredibly cheap and very typical Peter Berg blandness. "Act of Valor 2" maybe?

They should move the date to early next year when they'll make more money because right now they're going to lose it. Also, unlike ZD30, where is there any international market appeal in this…at all?

  2. Looks good. I think Ben Foster is the best actor of all of them. Maybe Peter Berg has become more than a TV grade director now and can maybe make a film instead of a movie.
