Got a Tip?

Zack Snyder Originally Wanted A Batman/Lois Lane Love Story In His ‘Justice League’

No matter your thoughts on Zack Snyder’s DC superhero films, you have to admit that the filmmaker took chances with his depictions of Superman and Batman, in particular. From the neck-breaking in “Man of Steel” to the ridiculous deadly violence and gun use in “Batman v. Superman,” we’ve seen Snyder put his own stamp on the lore of the two biggest superheroes on the planet. But sometimes his ideas are even too much for Warner Bros, as we see with Snyder describing a story element from “Justice League” that he wanted to add but was nixed by the studio.

In a new profile at Vanity Fair, the whole drama surrounding “Justice League” and the Snyder Cut is detailed. And in the piece, it’s revealed that there was a bridge too far between Zack Snyder and Warner Bros. before the filmmaker began work on “Justice League,” and it involved a proposed relationship between two unlikely characters.

Snyder’s pitch included the idea that, after Superman died in “Batman v. Superman,” Bruce Wayne (aka Batman) and Lois Lane would somehow start a romantic relationship. And that relationship would lead to some conflicted feelings regarding the decision to revive Superman in “Justice League.”

“The intention was that Bruce fell in love with Lois and then realized that the only way to save the world was to bring Superman back to life,” explained Snyder. “So he had this insane conflict, because Lois, of course, was still in love with Superman. We had this beautiful speech where [Bruce] said to Alfred: ‘I never had a life outside the cave. I never imagined a world for me beyond this. But this woman makes me think that if I can get this group of gods together, then my job is done. I can quit. I can stop.’ And of course that doesn’t work out for him.”

Some people might read that and roll their eyes, as that seems like a pretty ridiculous story idea to include. Others would see it as an interesting wrinkle in the evolution of Batman’s story through Snyder’s films. Either way, it doesn’t appear that it’s going to be seen in “Justice League,” not even in the Snyder Cut.

But that’s not all that is revealed in the piece. Apparently, there is one thing that Snyder wanted to add to “Justice League” that he was able to shoot during his additional photography that will be included. A new scene with a new hero. While it’s not revealed who the hero is, Vanity Fair says the cameo “will blow hard-core fans’ minds.” Green Lantern seems like the obvious choice, right?

“Zack Snyder’s Justice League” arrives on HBO Max on March 18.
