After the success of 2020’s “We Can Be Heroes,” Robert Rodriguez wants to continue his relationship with Netflix. And for his next project with the streamer, he has another family-friendly movie in mind: a relaunch of his “Spy Kids” franchise.
Deadline reports that Zachary Levi and Gina Rodriguez will star as the parents of an all-new spy family in the reboot. Everly Carganilla and newcomer Connor Esterson will play their children. The new movie won’t be a follow-up to 2018’s Netflix show “Spy Kids: Mission Critical” or the 2011 film “Spy Kids: All The Time In The World.” Instead, Rodriguez plans to write, direct, and produce a new movie that takes place in the same universe but follows a different family from the original series. Racer Max co-writes the script with Rodriguez. Netflix co-produces with Skydance and Spyglass.
Levi’s coming off his performance as Kurt Warner in last year’s biopic, “American Underdog.” He’s also reprising his role as the titular superhero in “Shazam!: Fury Of The Gods,” out in December. As for Rodriguez, she’s landed two lead roles on TV: ABC‘s single-camera comedy “Not Dead Yet” and Amazon‘s “Last Known Position.” She also recently appeared in Amazon’s “I Want You Back” from earlier this year.
The “Spy Kids” relaunch marks Spyglass’s third franchise reboot in the past two years. They also revived the “Scream” series last year, and their “Hellraiser” reboot hits Hulu this Fall. As for Skydance, “Spy Kids” continues their successful partnership with Netflix that includes “The Old Guard,” “6 Underground,” and the upcoming “Heart Of Stone,” starring Gal Gadot.
Rodriguez also has the sci-fi heist actioner “Hypnotic” coming up, starring Ben Affleck and Alice Braga. There’s no release date yet, but expect it out at the end of the year.
