Well, Zac Efron's first year questing for recognition in more adult roles was a bit of mixed bag. He is probably still best known at the end of 2012 for being peed on by Nicole Kidman in "The Paperboy," and his efforts in Ramin Bahrani's "At Any Price" seemed to be overlooked by those debating the merits of the earnest picture. But the former tween Disney star is pushing forward admirably, and like it or not, he's getting involved in a movie about one of the most defining and tragic moments in American history.
Efron, along with Marcia Gay Harden, has joined "Parkland," a film that will be taking a look at the JFK assassination. The Tom Hanks-produced movie (cred alert!) is based on the book "Reclaiming History: The Assassination of President John F. Kennedy" by renowned author and former prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi that was adapted by Peter Landesman, who will also direct. It recounts the dramatic true story of the chaotic events that occurred at Parkland Hospital in Dallas on the day President John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963.
Efron will be taking the role of Dr. Charles ‘Jim’ Carrico, a resident in general surgery at the time of the event who was one of the first to take a look at the President. His name comes up generally in discussions about the exit wound, with the common story going around that Carrico and his team reported that the president's head had been blasted out. But he has later clarified, "Everyone in the room was trying to save a life, not figure out forensics . . . We were trying to save a life, not worrying about entry and exit wounds."
Paul Giamatti, Billy Bob Thornton and Jacki Weaver also feature in the the film that will be shot in Austin, Texas with an aim to get in theaters in time for the 50th anniversary of the assassination. Because, you know, marketing.
