Got a Tip?

Yet Another Actor (Mostly) Pooh-Poohs ‘Watchmen’ Sequel Notions

Fans of “Watchmen” and even passersby with limited knowledge of the Alan Moore-penned graphic novel realize that the idea of a sequel to the film is preposterous. One never existed, the graphic novel is not open-ended.

But the Fox/Warner Bros. legal tussle show that sequel rights — if not at the epicenter of the battle – were still very much a part of the equation. Maybe neither studio has sequel intentions yet, but if “Watchmen” is the cash cow they were both hoping it to be, you know it’s going to be in some execs thoughts.

Director Zack Snyder has said several times he’s not interested and Nite Owl actor Patrick Wilson admits the idea has been discussed, but not even the actors think it’s even possible [ed. note where there’s a dollar and a will, there’s a way].

The newest person to chime in is actress Malin Akerman (aka Silk Spectre II) who spoke to MTV’s Splashpage.

“It would be interesting to see,” she admitted. “But I don’t really know how [a sequel] would ever be possible. Because ‘Watchmen’ is ‘Watchmen,’ and we covered pretty much the whole novel. I would be curious to see what [a sequel] would look like,” Akerman allowed. “But I don’t know if that would fly.”

Hire Alan Moore to write a sequel? Not gonna happen. Hire someone else to write a sequel? Fans would balk and go apeshit with outrage. Hire someone to write a Minutemen prequel? If it was done by the right person, fans might be slightly less hysterical about it. Anyone over at WB with half a brain probably realizes this is their only option. But again, it probably all rests on whether “Watchmen” is gangbusters or not which is should probably be. We’re thinking “Iron Man,”-like numbers and success which is not too shabby.
