Got a Tip?

Woody Allen’s Latest Is Titled ‘Blue Jasmine,’ Film Acquired By Sony Pictures Classics

nullAs day follows night, 2013 will bring another Woody Allen-directed film with an all-star cast. And barely a week into the new year, word is firming up on the director's latest. We knew already that the film, the first by the filmmaker to be mostly set in San Francisco, stars Cate Blanchett alongside Alec Baldwin, Bobby Cannavale, Louis C.K., Andrew Dice Clay, Sally Hawkins and Peter Sarsgaard, and involves a woman facing financial ruin, who comes across a man who may be able to stay solvent.

But now the film has a title, in "Blue Jasmine," revealed in a press release along with the news that the film has a distributor in the shape of Sony Pictures Classics. That shouldn't be a huge surprise; SPC has looked after Allen's last four films, and while last year's "To Rome With Love" didn't match the enormous success of its predecessor "Midnight In Paris," the film was likely still profitable, and they're presumably hoping for another piece of summer counter-programming (though no release date has been set yet). The press release also reveals that Michael Stuhlbarg has joined the cast, which is always welcome news, and that the film is "the story of the final stages of an acute crisis and a life of a fashionable New York housewife." Could this be a return to more serious territory for the filmmaker, despite the cast of comic talents? We'll find out when "Blue Jasmine" hits later in the year.
