If you’re a child that grew up in the United States and didn’t watch “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood,” then I feel sorry for you. One of the greatest children’s shows of all time, ‘Mister Rogers’ ran for a total of 31 seasons and over 900 episodes, led by its star, and everyone’s favorite neighbor, Fred Rogers. In the new trailer for “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” we get a sneak peek at what is sure to be a must-see documentary for fans of the TV series.
Just in the trailer alone, you see just how much of an impact Fred Rogers had on generations of children, and society as a whole. From talking about race issues, death, and divorce, Fred Rogers was one of the biggest voices in the TV industry speaking up about injustices and real-world problems, in a way that kids could easily comprehend. And he did it with a calm voice and smile.
“Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” comes from Academy Award-winning director Morgan Neville, who is best known for his film “20 Feet from Stardom.” As seen in the footage, there will be interviews with cast members, footage from the TV show, as well as behind-the-scenes and home video footage.
This film isn’t the only Mister Rogers film in the works right now. Just recently, Tom Hanks (of course) signed on to play the TV icon for a Fred Rogers film, “You are my Friend.” That film, from director Marielle Heller, isn’t a biopic about Rogers, but instead will focus on the TV star’s interactions with a reporter and his impact on the reporter’s life.
“Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” had its premiere at Sundance, but will finally be released in theaters on June 8. Make sure to bring your tissues because this film definitely feels like a tearjerker.
