It appears that not even Tim Burton’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” is going to derail the future of the ‘Wonka’ franchise. Recently, it was announced that Timothee Chalamet and “Paddington” filmmaker Paul King are going to reinvent the candymaker in a new prequel film, simply titled “Wonka.” And now, we have a better idea of the other actors that will help round out the cast.

According to THR, it appears the “Wonka” prequel film from filmmaker Paul King is adding Rowan Atkinson, Sally Hawkins, and Olivia Colman to the cast. The new actors join star Timothee Chalamet, who was previously announced as the title character. The film is said to take place before the events of Roald Dahl’s famous book, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and tells the story of Willy Wonka as a younger man.
Rowan Atkinson is a legendary comedic actor, most famous for playing the character of Mr. Bean in countless projects. Hawkins is probably best known for her Oscar and Golden Globe-nominated role in “The Shape of Water.” However, she’s also appeared in Paul King’s most recent film, “Paddington 2.”
But perhaps the biggest addition is that of Colman, who is an Oscar-winning actress that basically turns every project she stars in into some sort of prestige awards-contending thing. That said, we probably shouldn’t expect “Wonka” to be an early Oscar front-runner, though crazier things have surely happened. Colman just seems to be taking on more mainstream, franchise roles as of late, with “Wonka” and the previously announced “Secret Invasion” for Marvel Studios.
The “Wonka” film is currently in production now and is expected to hit theaters in March 2023.
