If you’ve seen James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad,” you know that the film is basically a reboot of the franchise but with a few returning characters, such as Harley Quinn, Rick Flagg, and Amanda Waller. But one of the biggest names from David Ayer’s “Suicide Squad” that didn’t show up is Will Smith as Deadshot. And according to a new interview, it appears the reason Smith didn’t show up is purely a scheduling issue, and he’s actually open to returning as his assassin superhero.
Speaking in a recent GQ video, Will Smith answered the question about why he wasn’t in Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad” and why Idris Elba was cast as Bloodsport, a character that is seemingly very similar to Deadshot. Well, the actor makes it seem like it all came down to scheduling.
“Yeah, I was working, and they were ready to shoot,” said Smith. “It was a timing issue.”
However, it doesn’t appear that Smith has actually watched “The Suicide Squad” or knows anything about the film. In fact, he questioned the crew making the video if Elba’s character was actually Deadshot or not because Smith didn’t know if he would even be able to return if he wanted to?
“The left Deadshot out [of ‘The Suicide Squad’], right?” asked the actor. “So Idris [Elba] is playing a different character or is he playing Deadshot? A different character? Alright, cool, so I can come back.”

Obviously, the hopeful amongst the fandom can read that as Smith wanting to return to the DCEU as Deadshot. But honestly, judging by his tone and how he asked, it doesn’t seem like the actor really has any intentions on doing any Deadshot projects anytime soon but he’s at least open to the idea if it comes along. So, basically, don’t hold your breath.
