Will Poulter’s career trajectory has been going nowhere but up in recent years, starting with standout roles in “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch,” “Midsommar,” “Dopesick,” and “The Maze Runner” films. The upcoming years should be no different, as he’s recently been cast as Adam Warlock in the upcoming Marvel Studios film, “Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3.” But before he’s launched into superstardom, Poulter decided to try his hand at a musical crime-thriller with the upcoming independent film, “The Score.”
The film is directed by Malachi Smyth and follows a duo of small-time crooks (played by Poulter and Johnny Flynn) who drive out to a secluded café for one big score, and features music written by Johnny Flynn, himself. It’s a unique genre-blending film that works as a showcase for the charisma of Will Poulter, who was instantly drawn to the project.
“I thought it was so unique,” Poulter said. “It was unlike anything I’d read before. And it was so character-full. It was so entertaining. It was so funny. It was so full of pathos. And I couldn’t really box it. I couldn’t find a genre to describe it. It was impossible to label and that was a huge part of its charm, I think. And when I found out that Johnny Flynn and Naomi Ackie were involved, it was kind of a no-brainer for me.”
Naturally, you can’t talk with a star of the Marvel Cinematic Universe without mentioning those upcoming projects, specifically in Poulter’s case the experience of joining the cast of “Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3” as the much anticipated Adam Warlock, a character he didn’t really know.
“I was very familiar with Guardians of the Galaxy and it was kind of my favorite ‘planet’ within the Marvel universe if you like,” Poulter explained (read more from this part of the interview here). “I’m just a huge fan of the tone and the creativity and James Gunn’s work and so many of the actors, you know, that I now get to call colleagues, which I’m very grateful for. So yeah, to have any kind of part in that world is very, very cool for me.”
“The Score” hits select theaters on Friday, June 3, and VOD on June 10. You can listen to the entire conversation below:
