Beleive it or not, but "MacGruber" is a favorite among many of The Playlisters. For real. If you think we're just a bunch of art house snobs, you can throw this movie on and we'll happily laugh our asses off. And we were pretty excited when a couple of weeks ago, director Jorma Taccone revealed that he was developing a sequel to the movie with co-writers John Solomon and Will Forte (also the star). But it looks like that news was more just a fantasy than reality.
Taking part in a press conference for this summer's "That's My Boy" alongside Andy Samberg, Forte reveals that Taccone was perhaps speaking a bit out of turn. "As for 'MacGruber 2,' it's very much in the works. We're just… o, I'm kidding. Jorma mentioned it. He was really tired one morning giving an interview, and he said something stupid about it. Believe me, we would love… we had so much fun doing that. We're proud of it, and we jokingly talk about the sequel all the time. But I don't think anybody in their right mind would give us any money for it. If somebody gives us money for it…," he trailed off.
Although, that doesn't seem likely. While the original only cost a mere $10 million, it didn't even make that worldwide, so unless a studio executive decides they want to be fired in a blaze of glory and greenlights this thing, it's probably not gonna happen. Samberg jokingly offered $1000 to shoot a flipcam version (hilarious), but even that seems more realistic than a "MacGruber" sequel. So just hang on to the DVD and SNL downloads you have of the skits, because that's about all we'll ever see from the character. [AICN]
McGruber was in my opinion one of the best films of last year. It did what it said on the tin and so much more. It's a crime that it wasn't more successful and Forte isn't a bigger star.
It was a failure of marketing and a studio who had no idea how to sell it. Even if the studio had no confidence in the pictures prospects, a cheap more thought out platform/grass roots strategy through universities would've built word of mouth etc. …and more people would have seen this ridicules gem.
I prey that there will be a McGruber II down the road, please don't give up Will!
