On paper, teaming up Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis seems like a no-brainer that would result in awesome hilarity. In practice, we got the thoroughly underwhelming “The Campaign,” a low point for both comic actors, but they’re going to give it another go on something that sounds a lot more promising.
The Wrap reports that the pair are set to reunite for “Larry’s Kidney,” which looks like it will be the next movie from Richard Linklater. Based on the memoir of the same name by Daniel Asa Rose, the story follows a man who travels with his cousin and mail-order bride to China in order to get a life-saving kidney transplant. Here’s the Amazon synopsis:
Larry Feldman desperately needed a kidney. After two god-awful years on dialysis, watching his life ebb away while waiting on a transplant list behind 74,000 other Americans, the gun-toting couch potato decided to risk everything and travel to China, the controversial kingdom of organ transplants. But Larry urgently needed his cousin Daniel’s help…even though they had been on the outs with each other for years.
So begins the quest of two star-crossed cousins to rejuvenate Larry’s failing body and ever-romantic heart, while avoiding getting tossed into a Chinese slammer.
No word yet on when production will begin, but there’s lots of Linklater coming your way. The director’s epic “Boyhood” opens this summer, and Gravitas Ventures just snatched up the U.S. rights to the documentary, “21 Years: Richard Linklater.” Directed by Michael Dunaway and Tara Wood, the film draws on the idea that the first 21 years of work defines the career of an artist. Ethan Hawke, Jack Black, Keanu Reeves, Billy Bob Thornton, Matthew McConaughey, Jason Reitman, Julie Delpy and more contribute to the doc. No release date yet, but hopefully we’ll see this soon.
