Today seems to be one where people wanting sequels are having their dreams crushed. First, Guillermo del Toro closed the door on “Hellboy 3,” and now Will Ferrell is wiping his hands of a much-dreamed-about follow-up to “Step Brothers.”
“You have to resist the temptation,” the actor told Rolling Stone. “It’s just tough because the things everyone wants you to do sequels of are special because there’s not a sequel of it. I guess we’ll see, but as of now there are no plans. We just don’t want to be doing sequels of everything.”
Before you side-eye Ferrell for making “Zoolander 2” and “Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues,” he says has no regrets, at least of the latter, though he does get the sentiment from those who were disappointed.
“I think we personally feel great about what we did with ‘Anchorman 2,'” Ferrell said. “And I think there are actually some people who like it more than the original. But then you always get that little bit of people saying, ‘Awww, why’d they have to do that?’ ”
Ferrell’s comedic partner-in-crime, director Adam McKay, holds a small flickering hope that maybe “Step Brothers 2” could happen much farther down the line when Ferrell and John C. Reilly are much older, but Ferrell has his doubts, worrying that the characters just might wind up being “more pathetic” than funny. And anyway, it’s not like there isn’t plenty more of Ferrell and Reilly to come — the pair are currently filming “Holmes And Watson,” which, based on the title and premise alone (yep, they’re the world-famous detectives), already has our ticket. Meanwhile, Ferrell’s next big-screen outing, “The House,” opens on June 30th. [AV Club]
