‘White Noise’: LCD Soundsystem Releases ‘New Body Rhumba’ In Lead-Up To Noah Baumbach’s Upcoming Film

While Noah Baumbach‘s latest, “White Noise,” already had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, it won’t reach audiences until later this year. But the build-up to the upcoming film commences today with the release of LCD Soundsystem‘s new single “new body rhumba,” the band’s first new material in five years.

The new single marks the latest collaboration between Baumbach and LCD Soundsystem frontman James Murphy. Murphy wrote musical scores for two of Baumbach’s earlier films, 2009’s “Greenberg” and 2014’s “While We’re Young.”  Danny Elfman scores “White Noise,” though, but one imagines Netflix salivates at the chance for either Elfman or Murphy (or both!) to snag Oscar wins for their compositions this winter. Netflix has had five Oscar nominations in musical categories in the past four years, so it only makes sense they want a win this year.

“new body rhumba” also commences LCD Soundsystem’s latest residence at Brooklyn Steel. The Brooklyn-based band opened the venue in 2017 with three runs, then played another extended engagement at Brooklyn Steel late last year before the Omricron wave derailed their final three shows. The band’s latest stint at their hometown haunt comes after residencies in London, San Francisco, Boston, and Philadelphia earlier this year.

“White Noise” is Baumbach’s latest film since 2019’s “Marriage Story.” It’s an adaptation of Don Delillo‘s award-winning 1985 novel of the same name, about a professor and his family who must deal with the aftermath of a cataclysmic “Airborne Toxic Event.” The film stars Baumbach regulars Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig, along with Raffey Cassida, André Benjamin, Alessandro Nivola, and Jodie Turner-SmithDon Cheadle, Lars Eidinger, Sam Nivola, and May Nivola round out the main cast.

Critics liked “White Noise” at its world premiere on the Lido (read The Playlist’s review here), but general audiences must wait a little longer. It gets a limited theatrical release on November 25, then hits Netflix on December 30. Listen to LCD Soundsystem’s new song and watch a teaser for “White Noise” below.
