2017’s “Wonder,” about a boy with Treacher Collins syndrome trying to fit in at a new school, tugged at a lot of people’s heartstrings. And it did well at the global box office, too, earning $306 million on a $20 million budget. So, naturally, Lionsgate has a new film based on R.J. Palacio‘s follow-up novel ready to hit theaters this Fall.
A sequel of sorts, “White Bird: A Wonder Story” shifts focus from Auggie Pullman, the protagonist from “Wonder,” to his classmate and adversary Julian Albans. After being expelled from school for his treatment of Auggie, Julian struggles to fit in. To help him find his place, Julian’s grandmother steps in with a tale from her childhood, hoping it will change his life.
Here’s the film’s official synopsis, courtesy of Lionsgate:
From the best-selling author of Wonder, the book that sparked a movement to “choose kind,” comes the inspirational next chapter. In White Bird: A Wonder Story, we follow Julian, who has struggled to belong ever since he was expelled from his former school for his treatment of Auggie Pullman. To transform his life, Julian’s grandmother finally reveals to Julian her own story of courage — during her youth in Nazi-occupied France, a boy shelters her from mortal danger. They find first love in a stunning, magical world of their own creation, while the boy’s mother risks everything to keep her safe.
Bryce Gheisar returns in “White Bird” to reprise his role as Julian. Joining him are Helen Mirren, Gillian Anderson, Ariella Glaser, and Orlando Schwerdt. Marc Forster takes over directing duties from Stephen Chbosky for the sequel. It’s Forster’s first film since 2018’s “Christopher Robin.” Mark Bomback adapts Palacio’s 2019 novel of the same name as screenwriter.
