Small towns are great places to grow up. Many of them are picturesque, and their residents foster meaningful relationships with each other, most importantly. They’re places where the barber, pharmacist and bar owner—possibly in that order—ask how your kids are doing and you ask them the same while walking down Main Street. Bearing that in mind, these same communities swap that friendliest of camaraderie with the deepest depths of grief when tragedy strikes one of their own. Unfortunately, a town like Mayberry is what it is: fiction. “When the Streetlights Go On” is a new project that explores a similar situation.
Directing at least one episode of the show is Rebecca Thomas. She is most well-known as being a nominee for the Someone to Watch Award—at the 2013 Independent Spirit Awards—for her film “Electrick Children.” Thomas has also directed one episode of Netflix’s “Stranger Things.” Joining Thomas on the series is fresh-faced screenwriting pair Chris Hutton and Eddie O’Keefe (“Shangri-La Suite”).
The project’s cast includes a number of up-and-comers bringing nice doses of experience, even at their young ages. Chosen Jacobs—best known for playing one of Pennywise’s young targets in “It”—and Sophie Thatcher (“The Tomorrow Man” & “Chicago Med”) star alongside Sam Strike, portrayer of the man himself in “Leatherface.” Added to the mix is Oscar nominee Queen Latifah (“Chicago”) as a detective investigating the crime.
Here’s the synopsis:
When a beautiful young girl is killed, her sister and high school peers struggle to retain a sense of normalcy as their suburban community reels and the murder investigation proceeds.
“When the Streetlights Go On”—distributed by Quibi—is set to premiere on or soon after the streaming service’s launch on April 6. Witness a tight-knit community come to terms with heart-wrenching loss and check out the trailer below.
