Taika Waititi‘s brand of off-kilter comedy became known to the globe thanks to “Thor: Ragnarok,” but those in the know have been hip to his distinct brand of humor for years. Hopefully, Marvel fans have taken the time to track down cult faves like “Hunt For The Wilderpeople” and “What We Do In The Shadows.” Both are well deserving of their cult status, and the latter in particular has seen fans call out for more ever since it was released. Well, they’re gonna get it.
In the works for a while, a TV series based on “What We Do In The Shadows” is now in development at FX, with a pilot production order. Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi will both be involved in the show as executive producers, with heavyweight Scott Rudin Productions also working behind the scenes. The cast is already starting to take shape with Kayvan Novak (“Danger Mouse,” “Thunderbirds Are Go“), Matt Berry (“Toast of London“), Natasia Demetriou (“Year Friends“) and Harvey Guillen (“The Thundermans,” “The Internship“) slated to star.
No word yet if Clement or Waititi will reprise their roles, but I’d presume given both their busy schedules, they might cameo and leave it at that. However, that’s not all that’s coming from the duo. Last fall, Waititi revealed that the pair are v e r y s l o w l y working on a new, genre tinged comedy together.
“The movie is called ‘We’re Wolves.’ It’s a word play. Americans love word plays. You guys love puns,” Taititi teased during the press rounds for “Thor: Ragnarok.” But he cautioned that it might be long, long, long time before it ever potentially sees the light of day.
“You aren’t going to see it for seven years,” he explained. “We are notoriously terrible at writing together, Jemaine and I. Usually takes place over emails. So we’ll email each other one line of dialogue once a month. ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ took six years to write.”
Well, we’ll be happy to wait as long as we’ve got “What We Do In The Shadows” to keep us occupied. [THR/Indiewire]
