What Kind Of Batman Will Superman Face? 5 Choices For ‘Superman & Batman’

What Kind Of Batman Will Superman FaceThis weekend at Comic-Con Warner Bros dropped a bombshell: instead of announcing a sequel to this summer’s “Man of Steel” (or a full-on “Justice League” movie), they revealed they would instead be bringing a Batman/Superman team-up movie to the big screen. Once again overseen by the “Man of Steel” team of director Zack Snyder and writer David S. Goyer (with Christopher Nolan taking a distant executive producer role this time around), the movie will likely retain much of the “Man of Steel” cast (including Amy Adams and Laurence Fishburne), while folding in a presumably new Batman mythology. What they didn’t say was who would be putting on the cape and cowl. Let the speculation begin!

The actor eventually chosen to be the new Batman will have to have a few attributes—they’ll have to be at least somewhat physically imposing and be able to perform a physically demanding role (not only will there be a number of fight sequences, undoubtedly, but wearing the suit is a task in and of itself); they will have to be comfortable with signing on for a number of movies (sequels, spin-offs, whatever); they need leading-man presence and acting chops (presumably whoever plays Batman will have a lot less screen time to establish who this Batman is compared to the already established Superman). Moreover, they’ll have to have some chemistry with Henry Cavill, while at the same not outshining him either. It’s a daunting proposition, but that’s not going to stop it being highly, highly coveted.

Even within that set of parameters the kind of actor they’ll be looking for depends on the kind of Batman the writers are going for. Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” series, after all, showed us that after many different kinds of Batman stories, there are always other ways to approach even the most established of characters. We’ve chosen five different potential kinds of Batman (seeing as we’re not privy to the tack they’re taking), and picked out a list of five actors who could fulfil the needs of that character if Snyder and Goyer actually go there.

nullThe Equal/The Actor Who’s A True Rival – Matt Bomer
One of the actors who could truly pull off Batman and is an equal to Superman Henry Cavill‘s—both in terms of handsomeness and rough age range, while not being so famous as to be priced out of the market—is Matt Bomer. For years Bomer has been turning in small, memorable roles in movies like “In Time” and (hilariously) last summer’s “Magic Mike,” while starring in cable TV series “White Collar,” though mainstream stardom has eluded him. Playing Batman would certainly bring him stardom and then some, and besides having a really great chin (vital as it’s the part of the face that remains on view when donning the iconic Batman garb) Bomer has a darkness that he rarely gets to tap into, as evidenced in that scene in “Magic Mike” when he prods Channing Tatum into fondling his wife’s fake breasts. (He’s also proven himself comedically too, should Warner Bros. want to incorporate some lightness into the character.) Bomer isn’t a complete stranger to the DC Comics universe either; he voiced Superman in a direct-to-video animated feature earlier this year called “Superman: Unbound” and ironically, Brett Ratner wanted him for the lead role in the aborted, J.J. Abrams-penned Superman flick “Flyby” (read all about that right here). The only real downside is that Bomer’s so damn pretty, he’s not always threatening and he’d need to tap into some inner demons.
Odds They Go With This Kind Of Batman: It’s a possibility, though Bomer would probably have to have a phenomenal screen test alongside Cavill for chemistry. And is it possible the two are too alike?

Joseph Gordon-LevittThe Idealist/The Actor That’s Familiar To The Franchise – Joseph Gordon-Levitt
At the end of “The Dark Knight Rises,” it was very clear that a new Dark Knight was rising in the form of Joseph Gordon-Levitt‘s character, a beat cop from Gotham named John Blake (real name: Robin John Blake). At the time, it seemed like that was the end of the franchise and Gordon-Levitt’s role in it. In fact, that was the intention. There was never meant to be a sequel with Gordon-Levitt as Batman, and for fanboys hoping that would be the case, it’s far too literal an interpretation of what Nolan and Goyer built. What Nolan was trying to say was Batman was a symbol and symbols are eternal and live on. Nolan was adamant about that symbolism (this being much more powerful than the physical incarnation of John Blake as Batman) and as a producer of “Man of Steel,” it stands to reason the filmmaker would have argued the same going forward. But this is a new world now and Nolan’s not really involved in “Batman & Superman” (or whatever this world’s finest collaboration will actually be called) and will only take an executive producer credit, which means essentially very little active participation. So in many ways, WB and Snyder/Goyer are free of any Nolan rules in this new DC Universe. If they did go with Joseph Gordon-Levitt (which frankly, doesn’t feel like it’s going to happen, but it’s fun to discuss), there’s lot of potential DC Universe ramifications—effectively extending the Nolan Batman universe while simultaneously suggesting that both “Man of Steel” and those Batman movies exist in the same world (which takes a little logic leaping). The “cons” might ultimately outweigh the “pros” with casting Gordon-Levitt, whose physical stature suggests his Robin namesake more than Batman himself, and no matter how much Warner Bros. wants to quickly establish these franchises and this world (and this might be a shortcut to doing so), Nolan has long said his trilogy is closed and off-limits, so don’t hold your breath.
Odds They Go With This Kind Of Batman: Sorry, not gonna happen.

nullThe Brute/The Actor Snyder Already Loves – Joe Manganiello
Zack Snyder has been outspoken about how hard it was to cast Superman. He made it equally clear that it came down to two actors—Cavill and Joe Manganiello, co-star of “True Blood” and (again) “Magic Mike.” Snyder, immediately after casting Cavill, was adamant that he loved Manganiello and that Cavill won out because of the “innocence” the actor possessed, something that would be wholly unnecessary for a certain black-suited avenger of the night who has been singularly obsessed by his parents’ murder for decades. Manganiello certainly has the physical presence for Batman and we can easily see him going toe-to-toe with Cavill both fighting-wise and in terms of swooning-lady handsomeness. Manganiello would have to shave his trademark salt-and-peppery beard but he’s got the extreme jawline necessary for wearing the cowl, so everything should be fine. His familiarity with Snyder, and Snyder’s genuine conviction that he was the only other real candidate for “Man of Steel” perhaps ups his chances considerably. This could be Snyder having his (beef) cake and eating it too. Problem is while known for his good looks, his imposing figure and his build, Manganiello’s not really known for his acting and while he’s fine in “True Blood” as the brooding, sensitive, ass-kicking werewolf hunk, he’s not exactly a thespian, and compared to say Christian Bale, this would seem like a major step backwards.
Odds They Go With This Kind Of Batman:  A little doubtful, even if Snyder gives him his vote.

nullThe Older, More Cynical Batman/The Actor We’d Love To See Them Consider – Nikolaj Coster-Waldau
As revealed in the Comic-Con presentation, this Batman/Superman movie will take a bit of tonal inspiration from Frank Miller‘s classic “Dark Knight Returns” series, though the filmmakers’ stressed it would not be a direct adaptation. However, one element they could be lifting from Miller’s take is the inclusion of an older, slightly grizzled and more cynical Batman. A darker Batman, one thinks, with a more of a by-any-means-necessary vigilante approach—at least compared to Superman’s method. If they decide to go with this approach, we think that a great option would be Nikolaj Coster-Waldau from HBO fantasy series “Game of Thrones” and this year’s sleeper hit “Mama.” Coster-Waldau is 42, which makes him 12 years older than Cavill, and as we’ve seen on “Game of Thrones,” he can certainly glint with handsome deliciousness with the best of them. More importantly, Coster-Waldau has the physical look and world-weariness that this interpretation of the character would require, and he can still kick ass with the best of them. If they are going with a slightly older version of Batman (or at least a wiser one with a much more pessimistic worldview which makes him the perfect rival for Superman), we can’t think of anyone better suited. The only snag, of course, would be fitting the shooting around Coster-Waldau’s difficult, time-intensive “Game of Thrones” schedule, but considering that both HBO and Warner Bros/DC are owned by the same parent company (Time Warner), we’re sure they’d make it work if they wanted to. And hey, it’s “Game of Thrones” so who knows if he even survives the next season?
Odds They Go With This Kind Of Batman: We’re not sure this is their approach, but we’d go with this choice in a heartbeat, simply because it’s potentially the most exciting.

nullThe Brooder/The Actor In The Christian Bale Mold – Richard Armitage
Among the many questions posed by this new Batman is what direction the filmmakers and the studio will take the character, specifically after Nolan’s incarnation—is he going to be a somewhat lighter model, which should more easily allow for a team-up like this to happen (and pave the way for the more outwardly comic book-y “Justice League“) or will they stick with the more brooding version as established by Christopher Nolan‘s films with Christian Bale‘s performance? If the choice is the latter, we think Richard Armitage would be a pretty great option. Armitage would also be an “older” Batman option, since he’s 41, but the studio is already familiar with him, as he portrays Thorin Oakenshield in the three ‘Hobbit‘ films, and he’s got a bit of a comic book background, as well (he played a small role as a Nazi in “Captain America: The First Avenger“). Armitage has a similar, Bale-like intensity and the ability to convey a number of emotions through a glassy stare or purse-lipped facial expression. When it comes to the mood of the Dark Knight, especially when he’s at his darkest, Armitage could easily bring that to life. If they choose to go in the Christian Bale mold, he should be at the top of their potential list and with the ‘Hobbit’ movies done shooting, he’s very much available.
Odds They Go With This Kind Of Batman: A back-up choice, we could see this happening.

nullThere’s one additional potential wildcard in the form of Armie Hammer. When we talked to Hammer a few weeks ago, he said he was “painfully close” to being Batman for the abandoned “Justice League” movie that was to be directed by George Miller (yes, he was in the cape and cowl at one point). With “The Lone Ranger” proving to be a nonstarter, that clears up Hammer’s schedule for the next few years and once again makes him a franchise free agent. The question, of course, is whether Warner Bros. will return to that well, or settle on someone entirely new. Hammer wasn’t exactly much of a personality in “The Lone Ranger” (he desperately needs a real director like David Fincher in “The Social Network,” his last decent role), so that’s a major strike against him. In the same way that the failure of ‘Lone Ranger’ frees up Hammer, the so-so box office of “Pacific Rim” could allow Charlie Hunnam to cross over, but he was the opposite of presence in the blockbuster, so the actor will have to prove himself before he’s considered for these big league shoes. We also thought that Luke Evans could be a good Batman (again) in the Christian Bale style, although his commitment to the on-again/off-again “The Crow” remake could throw that off and his charisma is up for debate. We’re also sure that there are a number of fresh-off-TheCW hunks that we’re completely unaware of, but that you can educate us about in the comments. So who are we forgetting about/unaware of? What kind of Batman do you think Snyder/Goyer/WB will go with? Sound off below as to who you would choose as the next Dark Knight.

  1. Although, the best choice is Michael Fassbender, even though he's tied up with Magneto. Imagine him enacting A Serious House on Serious Earth and you'll agree, I believe.

  2. My money is on Anson Mount for all the above (The Brooder, The Older More Cynical Batman, The Brute, etc.) But Nikolaj Coster-Waldau seems like a good choice. If I had my way, they'd do a live action Batman Beyond and cast Clint Eastwood as the old Bruce Wayne. But hey, a bat-fan can dream…

  3. I say let Chris be with the Avengers as (Thor) and let Liam be with DC as (The Dark Knight) and one day they can cross paths while Liam will kick Iron Man's Ass and Superman will send Thor back to Asgard with his tail tucked!
If that doesn't work, just watch Luke Evans in Fast 6. He can more than pull it off!

  4. Wow cant wait for this Film to come out. This is every fanboys dream. Superman and Batman together with great writers behind it it has more than a great chance of being huge as long as balance is given to the two main Characters and given good Character development. GO DC

  5. it will be interesting to see how much of the superman/batman relationship they take from The Dark Knight Returns… it was a cool dynamic that i always wanted to see explored further. i'd prefer the more grizzled, world-weary, older batman, but i have faith in Snyder and Goyer regardless… they won't botch this. They will make an awesome film that will have absolutely zero chance of living up to the insane hype (the very same hype that i will eat up every damn day, btw)… there are several actors who could do it, so i won't complain about who gets the role. as a fan, i'm just glad they are doing this.

  6. Hey this article is rubbish guys. Bomer is gay, so we can count him out. Mangienello is a savage, Bruce Wayne is got class. Nikolaj can't even speak english, count him out. Richard Armitage looks like a psycho not a hero. Armie Hammer is blonde and dum, no way you can count him out. Levitt could be okay, BUT he's skinny. Oh yeah, to continue the great tradition set by Nolan we need our lead to be British because let's be honest they do good on these kind of things.

  7. Im going for Andrew Lincoln as the new Bats. He plays in TWD a tortured and in the same time a bad ass character, also with moral codes, the prefect Batman. Also Id like to see actors from TDK trilogy like Gary Oldman as J. Gordon and Anne Hathaway as Catwoman.

  8. Out of the Batman choice topic, just a litlle message for those who come here just to hate and complain, probably because they dont have anything else to do.
No one cares for what you think about man of steel or if it was bad or good or if snyder is a bad director, not everyone has the same opinion or taste as you, and this doesnt even mean i like the guy as a director, because i don't, or that i liked man of steel, i enjoyed it but also thought it could have been a lot better. but you dont see me complaining… but someone with a a few brains has its own opinion and its own taste and if they like it good for them if they dont well better luck next time.
Having said that i agree with the (one) person that said that you spend to many time on your computer and cant even apreciate anything anymore.
Just be grateful that someone is even making and trying to make this movies for you and if you don't like it dont't watch it or even better try to do a better job yourselfs and stop complaining, except you cant and probably most of you who just complain and think they could would do a 100 times worst, but in here everybody is an expert and a bench coach always thinking they could do something better even if its something that you probably dont even know how to do .
I am sorry for everyboyd else who didnt came here to complain or hate but i just hate these ungrateful dumb people who dont even apreciate what others try to do for them and all they know how to do is criticise others.

    Best to all of you.

  9. It's too late now, but if you think about it, Matt Bomer would have been an ideal Superman — and Henry Cavil would have been a fantastic Batman! Of those listed, I'd lean toward Manganiello. Jake Gyllenhaal though is an interesting choice. For those who have problems with his build, well the same was once said of Michael Keaton and he ended up pulling off the role quite well.

  10. I really like the choice of Matt Bomer as Batman, he's got the look and he's got the voice to play Batman. Plus he looks very much like Henry Cavill. If you've ever read the comics or seen the animated films, you'll notice that Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent always look like the same person. Only thing Matt Bomer would need to do is add some muscle to complete his transformation to be Batman.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau would be a great second choice for Batman, maybe even the first, he's a much better actor then Matt Bomer in my opinion. He's danish but that is kind of irrelevant at this point sense most of our iconic superheros are being played by great foreign actors.

  11. It'd have to be someone who is able to do "voice acting". Bomer did a great job as superman/clark kent in the animated film. He is awesome with voice modulation. So he would be my pick. He is only an inch shorter than Cavill and pretty close in age. And of course that jaw line, and those eyes. Only problem is Batman would be more beautiful than Superman…lol. My other two picks are Jon Hamm and Gerard Butler. Jon Hamm has a commanding voice and a strong chin.

  12. Wow. MATT BOMER as Batman…I like that. Then I read on and saw the rest of the potential choices and thought some are pretty good choices too although, in the end, I still find Matt Bomer to be the perfect choice. I saw him in Texas Chainsaw Massacre and thought that tough energy is perfect for Batman. He also at the same time portrayed the perfect, protective older brother. Then his Neal Caffrey persona is a great fit for Bruce Wayne the playboy. Matt can handle the dual personality this role offers. And he's so fit…those hard abs and biceps … oooooohhh wheee. BTW I never like that stiff rubber suit that Batman has. It doesn't look like he can even turn his head. The suit needs a new design.

  13. I do not think Matt Bomer would be a good batman… at all. He is is handsome… though I doubt that matters for batman as much as looking intelligent, and lets face it Matt Bomer has the look of kinda being dumb. Not saying I don't like him I loved him in Star Trek where he matched the character more.

  14. Come on, it's snyder and goyer. This will be a disaster.
Man of Steel was terrible. God, it was unbearable to watch.
Hollywood needs to stop giving work to Snyder. He will never be a good director. In fact, he will never be a director median.

  15. I am probably going to get slated for this, but….
Matt Bomer is openly gay…. There is nothing wrong with that, but what will the hardcore fanboys thing about it?

  18. I would love to see Matt Bomer cast as the new Batman. He'd be perfect, the guy can act, and has the perfect look for Bruce Wayne. He would have to put on a bit of Mass, but I don't see that as being too much of a problem.

  19. Oooof! All of these choicea suck!

JGL is the only decent choice, but he is more Nightwing than Batman. WB's and Snyder need offer big money to Bale to come back or go hard after Ryan Gosling or Liam Hemsworth as the new Batman! Anyone who says Jon Hamm is an idiot. Hamm is waaaaaay out of shape and this new Batman needs to be ripped and in shape in a matter of months since they will star filming this puppy around Feb 2014.

  20. I'm hoping that Snyder & company are misdirecting us by denying a direct adapt of the Miller classic. Coster-Waldau would be a great choice that Dark Knight.
Then if my hopes come true the next huge casting decision would involve The Joker.

  22. It's going to Armie Hammer. He was cast as batman once already , when he was a nobody. He was one of the contenders for superman in man of steel. He is going to co-lead man from U.N.C.L.E with Henry Cavill next year That means Henry and Armie will already have on-screen chemistry which is going to weigh heavily on the minds of theWarner Brothers executives. So unless Disney and Marvel steal Mr. Hammer he is going to the new batman

  23. My vote, ever since I learned Bale would be done after Rises, has been Jamie Bamber of Battlestar fame. He's under the radar, so he wouldn't cost too much, he has the chops, and I just think he's the perfect choice.

  24. I realize this but some of the suggestions I've heard are of actors who I cannot imagine having remotely a chance against superman. I mean Jake Gyllenhaal, really? Batman has to be physically, mentally and emotionally imposing and I think Jason Momoa is the perfect choice. The man is an absolute monster and that's how Superman needs to imagine this character. Joe Manganiello would also be a good choice because he has the build. If you want to go older and more experienced, then I would go with Anson Mount, and this is wayyyyy out there, what do you guys think of the guy who plays Steve in Hawaii Five-O. Just putting his name out there to see what people think.

  25. Although he was not the greatest Batman (still up there though), Christian Bale needs to consider the Batman role. It would not be fair for the fans and it would not be fair for the DC fans to have to endure another Batman. The new Man of Steel movie was great (even with the recent change of Supermans), but Bale you have to return! As a professional actor, you need to continue this legacy before you decide to move on. You have a long career ahead of you, and this will not destroy your "image" or "legacy" if that's what you are afraid of!

  26. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau would be perfect ! ! Can easily pull off the billionaire playboy… big physically imposing counterpoint to Cavill… can go dark with great acting chops!

If not I would love to see Andrew Lincoln… has pretty much mastered the hero on the verge of being a psycho…

Fassbender would be great also but he's pretty much tied to Magneto at this point…

    Can't wait ! ! ! !

  27. A bit funny how indiewire insisted in refering to Nolan as executive producing man of steel. But have to re-iterate that now that he actually is executive producing this one. Perhaps he's more executivy this time around.

  29. 1st off thank you for knowing what your talking about !!! Im tired of everyone in other articles saying that JGL Becomes Robin or batmans sidekick! Props lol

Nolan had the best Batman universe.. his movies were AMAZING!
so its sads for me to see Batman being rebooted ALREADY! until the role is cast im crossing my fingures they continue from Nolan verse (not likley, impossible?). they want it to seem like this universe was started from Superman but it wasnt .. Zack Snyder used TDK Realism and Darkness and even had Nolan produce his movie… i liked Man of Steel alot but critics hate Zack and he is gonna get ripped apart if he messes up on Batman. and then there will Be no Justice League.
    1. Christian Bale- "Dark Knight Returns"? He IS BATMAN! and would make fans happy and have a acomplished actor and a man who has masterd the role. this movie would bring in way more CASH! Y make 1 billion when u can make 2 😉
    2. JGL- Batman is not Bruce wayne he is a Symbol that cannot die! he was referd to in DKR as a hot head and a man who questioned alot of things. Butt heads with Superman. he needs to hit weight room! and act more like he did in Looper.

Im Seeing this movie regardless! just my opinion sorry so long hahaha

  30. I hate to have to embody the stereotype of closed-minded fanboy hysteria but it doesn't matter who they choose, the project is already doomed with Snyder in the directors chair. I don't mean it's doomed like it won't make 20 bazillion dollars and sell a shit load of toys but, because it will, it's just going to be bad movie. Man of Steel is a bad movie. Snyders visual style is just awful, just glossy fake bullshit. One degree away from Michael Bay. He's totally wrong for Batman and the fact they're tinkering with the origin story is a huge fucking misstep. Batman needs another solo reboot, solo universe. Don't neccesarrily cut and paste the Nolan realism pallete but no aliens either, no dudes flying around in front of 7-11. Start with The Riddler as a Julian Assamge like figure obsessed with surmising national intelligence secrets and blackmailing the entire city. Harley Quinn is the out of control new threat in town he uses as a piece in his twisted puzzle, till he double crosses her and becomes an enemy. Or use other characters we haven't seen been before or new versions of characters we have. Just please no Batman/Superman, and please no Snyder!

  31. Interesting choices. But you deserve extra points for writing an article that mentions bomer without feeling the need to drag in his sexuality(a non-issue). Yay! who said we aren't making progress?
He would totally nail the role btw, just would have to bulk up a bit.

  32. 10 actors i love to see play the role of Batman are
    1-Milo Ventimiglia
    2-Armie Hammer
    3-Jensen Ackles
    4-Ryan Gosling
    5-Garrett Hedlund
    6-Sean Faris
    7-Kellan Lutz
    8-Jake Gyllenhaal
    9-Mike Vogel
    10-Ian Somerhelder

  33. Considering the world that Snyder is trying to create, the one in which Superman is sort of the first superhero and therefore the catalyst for the next batch of superheroes to rise, it would make more sense that Bruce Wayne be fairly young (ie, mid thirties and under). Or else it wouldn't really make sense that his parents die at age 10 and then he just sits around for 25 years being pissed until he sees Superman and straps on his own cape? That would be foolish. It would make more sense in the story telling mold to either have a Batman who's been fighting crime under the radar in Gotham for a few years, or one that's young enough to be inspired by what Superman did in Man of Steel. That being said, Batman should never be inspired by Superman. He's the Dark Knight. Superman is the alien boy scout. That being said, it's clear that Danny McBride should play Batman and James Franco play both The Joker and Lex Luthor, and maybe Alfred Pennyworth as well.

  34. I think it would be nice to see Bomer as Batman. He is a good actor and charismatic.
I think next Batman actor should be in their mid 30's. I think he would be a nice fit.

  35. Have you guys not picked up on the fact that this is going to be a loose adaptation of Dark Knight Returns? The quote Harry Lennix read, and the style of the Batman logo is from DKReturns.

I think we are looking at a mid-to-late 40s (or perhaps even older) Batman for this. In which case, Jon Hamm would be my choice, or maybe your Coster-Waldau pick. Or… how about this… Michael fuckin' Keaton? They can go young with Lex. Gosling, mayhaps.

  36. Coster-Waldau is a great choice for slightly older Batman. He's in his 40's but in great shape. GOT season 3 proved that he has range. He can sell the rich playboy role, but at the same time he's believable as a dark depressed anti-hero.

  37. Simple- Colin Farrell or Jake Gyllenhaal. Both are physically suitable, age appropriate and damn good actors. Or what about a complete left-turn by casting Michael Keaton?! That way the Burton Batman series would be within the continuity of the DC Cinematic Universe, thus leaving no need to tell the origin story again in future stand-alone Batman movies. And when Keaton ages out down the line, have a new character take over the Batman mantle.
