Got a Tip?

Well Played: Alfonso Cuarón Laughs Off ‘Children Of Men’ Sequel Or Prequel Suggestions

Hollywood problem #5342: The incessant need to create sequels and prequels. The reasons are transparent. A film does well and all of a sudden studio execs get visions of a new yacht or an edition to the mansion in their heads and they’re off to the races. No one can let a good idea stand on its own as a self-contained story when there’s still money to be drained from the sponge.

So we give major hats off to director Alfonso Cuarón who told MTV yesterday that any rumors of his involvement in a prequel or sequel to his excellent 2006, post-apocalyptic drama, “Children of Men” — about a world with infertile mothers, starring Clive Owen — were plain wrong.

And amazingly, Cuarón is very aware of how ridiculous a sequel would be. ” ‘Children of Men 2, the baby is back and he’s mad!” the Mexican director said, laughing off the idea. Pressed further he fucks around. “Yes, [it will happen] Will Ferrell is going to play the baby.”

God, we love him all the more. But “Battlestar Galactica,” writer/producer David Eick announced last March that he’s adapting a version of ‘Children’ for TV. Cuarón washes he hands clean of that nonsense too. “No, no, no. Maybe Guillermo [Del Toro] has an idea for a remake,” he joked.

Meanwhile, there were other hopes that wanted the filmmaker to adapt The Umbrella Academy,” by My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way (he himself wished it). Nothin’ doin. “I like ‘The Umbrella Academy’ but I’m not associated with it,” he said flatly. Up next is a road movie set in England, Scotland and France called, “A Boy And His Shoe.” We honestly don’t know anything about this one, so we’ll have to do a little research and get back to you. Cuarón already has one the filmmaker of the day award on The Playlist.
