“Hey son,” do you have a dollar to spare?” That’s not the dire situation for “Watchmen” writer David Hayter yet or ever, but he’s curiously urging the nerdherd to vote with their dollars once again this weekend. He knows the beancounters at Warner Bros. are watching closely and he’s hoping to juke the stats a little by begging asking fans to pay for it again.
“You have to understand, everyone is watching to see how the film will do in its second week. If you care about movies that have a brain, or balls, (and this film’s got both, literally), or true adaptations — And if you’re thinking of seeing it again anyway, please go back this weekend, Friday or Saturday night. Demonstrate the power of the fans, because it’ll help let the people who pay for these movies know what we’d like to see. Because if it drops off the radar after the first weekend, they will never allow a film like this to be made again.”
Videogum hilariously quips, “I’m pretty sure we can all agree, that is the worst business model.”[HardcordeNerdity]
Speaking of Watchmen. Patton Oswalt, who we like, makes an unintelligible, rambling non-argument for why “Watchmen” is awesome and those who deign to make one criticism should kindly shut up. It basically amounts to, “it’s good because they filmed it.” Congratulations, Patton. Even more hilarious if it’s true. InContention says Oswalt has not even seen the film yet. Uhhh…
We wish we had time to do this. A very admirable list of 15 films playing at SXSW that you need to see. They highlight, “Anvil! The Story of Anvil,” “Sin Nombre,” “The Hurt Locker,” a bunch of mumblecore films that’ll we’ll remain skeptical about until proven otherwise, “Moon,” and a film that everyone seems to be talking about that we honestly know little about called, “Best Worst Movie.” Reminder to selves: investigate further. Could the character Axel Foley die in “Beverly Hills Cop 4” God, can he, plllleeeeaaaase? How about killing Brett Ratner on the way to the set too while we’re at it? [Cinematical]
Icelandic pixie singer Björk — who’s not that pixie-ish anymore and who kinda has gone off the deep end of her weird taste in recent years — will appear in the environmental documentary “Náttúra–Summer 2008.” [PFM]
The trailer for Sam Raimi’s “Drag Me To Hell” is out. Man, the premise looks paper-thin. Guess horror just needs any old excuse to get the story mechanics started. [Yahoo]
John Cooper has picked up the reins of the Sundance Film festival as director in the wake of Geoff Gilmore’s defection to Tribeca. [Anne Thompson]
Speakin of, Jeffrey Wells has made a list of Tribeca Film Festival picks. [Hollywood Elsewhere]
A glimpse of Johnny Depp in Tim Burton’s “Alice In Wonderland,” apparently got Disney folks all a flutter. [Cinematical]. We’d rather Depp stop wasting time appearing in mostly mediocre Tim Burton films (we’ll admit he was rather awesome in ‘Willy Wonka’ though).
I think “Best Worst Movie” has something to do with Troll 2. Could be wrong, but I think I recall that being the case.
Probably. You’re talking to the guy that went to see the Cesar best picture winner this weekend. Troll 2 isn’t exactly my wheelhouse. 😉
I haven’t seen Troll 2 yet, but there have been midnight showings popping up around the country thanks to its cult/meme internet status.
It’s no “Gingerdead Man.”
Just watched my screener of “Best Worst Movie” on Monday night, and liked it quite a bit. Kind of like a real life Christopher Guest film. Lots of fun.
Bjork is awesome, was awesome, will remain awesome.
Also, why highlight Jeff Wells’ Festival list? He acknowledges he only sees the popular stuff.
I needed an extra link?
i haven’t liked a bjork record in ages though i try, try, try.
