Nerds turned down dates and going out to make sure they saw this on time (5pm PT). Wait, that’s not true, they never had dates or anything to do.
We digress, the new Zack Snyder-helmed “Watchmen” trailer is up and the Interweb has basically peed their pants.
While visually impressive, it doesn’t feel realistic at all – a different world where slo-mo permeates all. Whatever, the kids love it already. This one appropriates Philip Glass’ famous “Koyaanisqatsi” (from the titular 1982 film, sounds like an updated version maybe) score and Muse’s Glass/Steven Reich influenced, “Take A Bow.“
Look for the shot in the trailer where a mob burns a Superman dummy. Snyder’s diss on modern-day Superheroes? (ironic considering how realistic “Watchmen” is supposed to be and how stylized and unrealistic it looks). We are finally warming to this though. It looks like it might be at least entertaining, Rorschach’s tough-guy growl aside (not as annoying as Christian Bale’s in “The Dark Knight”).
i love the nerd bashing this site indulges in, despite the fact you post silly speculation of an avengers movie more than most.
that is of course when your not endlessly blabbing on about your “favorite” movies, most of which criterion just happened to release and i’m betting you also happened to just see.
i’m sure you will even let this comment go up.
Well since it has a MPAA rating now, I guess the final cut has been made. Wonder how long it is? I also wonder if anyone really cares about this movie? I don’t ask that because it looks bad perse…it looks alright to me, but because I’ve never heard of Watchmen til this film, and if there is a secret Watchmen universe out there, they’ve kept themselves well hidden.
I think that I applaud the Watchmen team for including Glass and Muse, while simultaneously laughing at them for doing so.
You’ve said pretty much what I think about the Watchmen getting “Snyder-ized”, everything’s so damned slo-mo and extra shiny. The Watchmen is an intricately constructed story that is done a disservice by having unnecessary bells, whistles and CGI tacked on.
That, and this film is part of this idiotic idea of Snyder’s that every frame of film has to resemble every panel of the comic. It’s stupid and it’s caused a legion of fanboys to think that cinematic adaptations are mainly for the purpose of producing 100% “faithful” recreations. Remember, any tiny bit of artistic license is a tool of the devil!
“Snyder’s diss on modern-day Superheroes? (ironic considering how realistic “Watchmen” is supposed to be and how stylized and unrealistic it looks). “
I think it’s pretty damn appropriate, given that the whole theme of Watchmen is anti-hero superheroes and how the entire world turns against masked heroes, hence the Keene act.
Did you READ Watchmen? Burning Superman I think fits perfectly with the universe we’re talking about here.
I did read Watchmen. Did you READ this post? It’s *perfect* that they burn Superman in the story given the theme absolutely.
However, Zack Snyder’s Watchmen doesn’t look very realistic and anti-hero at all. It’s totally stylized, full of muscle-ripply slo-motion superhero world and i’m sure you can agree that’s everything that Watchen is not.
I’m sure Alan Moore cringes everytime he sees a second of slo mo on screen.
And i will alway stand behind the thought that someone else should have colored that comic. The colors belie the tone and never really fit. Hell, i would have loved it a lot more had someone else drew it. Story is good though, however someone convoluted. Glad they dropped the freighter thing, it woulda never worked onscreen.
Anonymous no.1 has had some hurt feelings here. Also everytime i list some of favorite movies he gets all insecure. Some of us went to film school and were avid movie watchers before there was DVD and or films not available on TV. Some of were friggin lucky enough to have excellent film classes in high school with wonderful teachers who screened us Truffaut at 16. My parents are foreigners and watched a ton of foreign films as a kid.
Not that i need to defend that to you, but hell, you do amuse me.
i’m not sure what is up with people and criterion. It really gets some people’s backs up against the wall. Other movies exist outside that collection.
