Watch: Very NSFW Trailer For Abel Ferrera’s Dominique Strauss-Kahn Movie ‘Welcome To New York’ With Gerard Depardieu

Hindered by legal precautions, a recently published tell-all memoir and its lead actress dropping out because of that fact, director Abel Ferrara‘s “Welcome To New York,” his thinly-veiled account of disgraced IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn, seemed like a lost cause. But it seems Ferrara, alongside his star Gerard Depardieu, are too formidable a team to be kept down, because our first glimpse of the film has landed online – and it is appropriately bombastic.

Apparently filming over the last six weeks in New York — the vacated role of Depardieu’s wife now occupied by Jacqueline Bisset – our first look at the film (via The Film Stage) roars right into the midnight activities of Depardieu’s rampaging, sex-addicted politician, “Mr. Deveraux.” The trailer appears primed for Cannes as a sales trailer, and in that respect, everything you’d expect from both Ferrara and Depardieu is on full display: the lurid, low-lit depiction of seedy rooms and activities and the hulking, silent men that occupy them — all set to the pulsing Goldfrapp soundtrack.

In real life, Strauss-Kahn was a frontrunner in 2011 to win the 2012 French presidential elections, but the politician’s arrest in New York on charges of attempted rape promptly shattered that hopeful future. Of course, the filmmakers are claiming no connection and with such a glossy, volatile potential look as “Welcome to New York,” it’s probably best to keep it that way. Consider our interest piqued, but check the (very NSFW) trailer out below, along with a new image from the film, and tell us what you think. Footage is currently screening to buyers at Cannes, so we could be seeing this on the fall festival circuit.
