After literally years in development, a process which saw original director Jonathan Demme leave the project and replaced by "The Eagle" and "Last King Of Scotland" helmer Kevin Macdonald, the long awaited "Marley" is on its way to theaters. And after some festival appearances at TIFF and most recently at Berlin (with SXSW around the corner), the U.K. trailer has landed, giving fans a first taste of what to expect.
As we noted in our recent review of the film, "Marley" certainly isn't lacking in content. Running nearly 2 1/2 hours, the documentary tackles the reggae and cultural icon as comprehensively as most would ever want. The film's flaw, however, is in putting reverance first and above any deeper critical analysis of the man, in an odd narrative that causes the musician's dramatic life story to be strangely uninvolving for certain stretches. But ultimately, as we summed it up in our review: "[It's] by no means a bad film, but we expected greater and all we really got was more. It presents a comprehensive portrait of the whens and wheres of Bob Marley’s life, but the hows, and crucially, the whys remain largely elusive."
All that being said, a documentary about one of the most influential musicians of the last four decades or so is certainly worth a peek. "Marley" opens on 4/20 (of course). [Vlicious]
Doesn't quite rise to "never seen before" status, as a mater if fact it seems a tad tired and cliché.
