One of the few movies pretty much everyone was in agreement on coming out of Cannes was “All Is Lost,” the new film from “Margin Call” writer/director J.C. Chandor that follows one man (Robert Redford), adrift at sea, following a horrific accident. The consensus? That it was pretty much brilliant (read our review from the festival here). The new trailer (courtesy of Yahoo) certainly doesn’t dampen our excitement, and features a little more of the story than we thought we’d see (maybe too much), with an overriding sensation that this movie is going to be really, really, ridiculously intense.
The trailer is almost incredibly wordless, because that’s how the movie is, but features stark text, “A man only has himself and his will to survive.” We then see a large shipping container has rammed into the side of Redford’s small sailboat. Then things go from bad to worse—his radio short circuits, rain pours into the hole in the hull, he’s forced to survive in an inflatable life raft. And if all that wasn’t bad enough—there are sharks! Mercifully, they aren’t part of an even-deadlier tornado, but still, they’re scary as fuck.
As the music pounds on, things become even more desperate and intense. Quite frankly, if we were seeing the movie in five minutes it would seem like an arduous wait.
It’s fascinating to see Chandor go from something like “Margin Call” to this; they both seem to be thrillers, ostensibly, but placed in two entirely different worlds and environments. It’s great to see a young filmmaker challenging himself like that, and an old actor like Redford willing to accept that challenge (everything about his performance looks amazing).
“All is Lost” opens on October 18th, which is entirely too far away.
Trailer gave away too much, in my opinion. Still really want to see it, but am disappointed by how much was revealed in the trailer 🙁
