In an end-of-the-world-heavy summer, we’ve seen blockbusters in which the world was saved (“Man Of Steel,” “World War Z“), cancelled (“Pacific Rim“), ended (“This Is The End“), and whatever happens in Edgar Wright‘s imminent “The World’s End.” So far, it’s been a fairly lighthearted take on the apocalypse. But as the days get shorter, the films look to get bleaker, as a trailer for a new young-skewing end-times picture demonstrates.
Based on the best-selling prize-winning novel by Meg Rosoff, “How I Live Now” is the latest film from director Kevin Macdonald (“Touching The Void,” “The Last King Of Scotland,”), and toplines Saoirse Ronan as an American teen, Daisy, who comes to stay with distant relatives in a time of strife. She ends up falling for one, Edmond (rising star George MacKay, of “The Boys Are Back”), but their affair is cut short when a nuclear device goes off and England is occupied, forcing Daisy and Edmond to desperately fight for survival.
It’s dark stuff, if the book is anything to go by, and the first glimpse of a trailer (via ScreenTerrier) suggests that Macdonald hasn’t watered things down here. It’s reminiscent of old-school apocalypse fare like “Survivors,” “When The Wind Blows” and even “Grave Of The Fireflies” as well as the more recent “28 Days Later,” and the young cast—which also includes “The Impossible” breakout Tom Holland—have a lot of promise. The film’s currently slated for U.K. release on October 4th, so don’t be surprised to see it added to the line ups at TIFF or Fantastic Fest in the near future, before Magnolia release the film further down the line. In the meantime, watch the trailer below.
I have never watched her in a movie that was bad. She has this strange unusual look and her face. She is head above most actors her age range and will blow away the competition if she gets the right profile project. And thank god she is choosing Art House fare & thought provoking films that really challenge.
They should change the music on the trailer.
I really like Saoirse Ronan. She can easily take the easy way and star in commercial Hollywood films but she picks risky art house fare too. I just reviewed her film 'Byzantium' where she plays a vampire and it is a refreshing take on the well-tread genre.
Ronan looks like young Sharon Stone in that pic. Didn't recognize her at all.
Looks shit. Why can't they get over twilight. Warm bodies, The Host, Beautiful creatures, Mortal instruments and now this, all twilightesque movies to milk money but failing.
