Got a Tip?

Watch: Trailer For Errol Morris’ Exceptional Documentary ‘Tabloid’

The theaters might be dominated at present by big, expensive action flicks, but for those after more thought-provoking cinema, it’s looking to be an excellent summer for documentaries. Already we’ve seen the likes of “The Arbor,” “Cameraman: The Life and Work of Jack Cardiff” and “L’Amour Fou,” and even more exciting prospects are coming down the pipe, including “Page One,” “Buck,” “Project Nim” and “Beats, Rhymes & Life.”

But one of the most anticipated is one that many of The Playlist team have already checked out: “Tabloid,” the excellent latest project from Errol Morris, the man behind classics like “The Thin Blue Line,” “Fog of War” and “Standard Operating Procedure.” The film debuted at Cannes last year, and since then we’ve caught up with it variously at Toronto, SXSW and Doc NYC, landing A grades across the boards from our reviewers. It’s finally hitting theaters courtesy of Sundance Selects on July 15th, and Apple have debuted a trailer on their site.

The documentary tells the bizarre story of Joyce McKinney, a beauty queen who, when left by her Mormon lover, tracked him to the U.K., where believing he had been brainwashed, she kidnapped him, becoming a British tabloid favorite in the meantime. It’s one of those stories that you wouldn’t believe if it hadn’t actually happened, and Morris is on top form as he examines every side of the “Rashomon“-esque tale. We highly recommend checking it out when it hits on July 15th, and you can get a taste from the trailer below, or in HD over at Apple.
