Five years ago, a trailer made the rounds online purporting to be an Eli Roth-produced horror film called “Clown” about a father that inexplicably begins turning into a monstrous clown after dressing up for son’s birthday party. It turns out the viral video was, of course, a fake trailer cooked up by commercial directors Jon Watts and Christopher D. Ford. Now, half a decade later, the fake movie is very real and has its very own authentic trailer.
The real trailer for the real “Clown” clocks in at two-and-a-half-minutes — roughly double the length of the original — and boasts some star power in the form of character actor Peter Stormare as that one old kook you see in horror movies that lays out the mythology of the film’s world. Ford and Watts wrote the film together, with Watts alone at the helm and Roth as the producer (and making an appearance as Frowny the Clown). From the glimpses in the trailer, it appears the film will be essentially split in two halves, with the first an exercise in body horror as the father’s body fuses with the clown suit and the second half going down the slasher path.
Despite having already seen release in Italy and the U.K., and now on home video in the latter, there’s still no stateside release date set for “Clown.” In the meantime, you can watch the new trailer for below, along with the original video that started it all.
