Oh, here’s one we totally forgot about. Announced forever ago, the latest from director Costa-Gavras (the man behind “Z” and “Missing“) finds him tackling the topical financial world in his latest effort, “Le Capital.” And we have to be honest, we’re not quite sure what to make of it.
Starring Gad Elmaleh, Gabriel Byrne, Natacha Regnier, Hyppolyte Girardot, Lyia Kebede and Bernard Lecop, and based on the novel by Stéphane Osmont—with further inspiration from the essay “Total Capitalism” by former Credit Lyonnais president Jean Peyrelevade—the film follows Marc Tourneuil (Elmaleh), the head of Europe’s Phoenix Bank who is facing a hostile takeover from U.S. hedge fund companies, while making a play to acquire a debt-laden Japanese bank. The tone of the piece seems both bitter and jaunty, dramatic and comedic, but we’re not quite sure the black humor really plays all that well. Despite doing some rounds on the festival circuit, the buzz on this has been fairly non-existent.
So much so, that we had no idea it’s opening in limited release on October 25th. Huh. Anyway, check out the trailer below along with some new pics and a poster. [The Film Stage]
