Watch: Titans! Will! Uh, Wrath! In First Trailer For ‘Wrath of the Titans’

nullWarner Bros, not content to merely satisfy fanboys with the awesome new "Dark Knight Rises" trailer, has also unleashed a new tease for a sequel that almost no one demanded: "Wrath of the Titans," the follow-up to 2010's abysmal 3D "Clash of the Titans" remake. And while we're not necessarily excited about this new one (how could we be?), it does look marginally more interesting, certainly more expensive, and generally just more than the first film. But, honestly, we're still using Marilyn Manson's cover of "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" to make a trailer seem edgier than it actually is?

The trailer is pretty much all smash, bang, gooey monster, repeat, although it does eek out some plot specifics: apparently the monstrous titans are unleashed and threatening to overthrow the gods, so Zeus (Liam Neeson, again) talks his son Perseus (Sam Worthington) into helping save the day (we're pretty sure Ralph Fiennes' Hades is probably involved). Or something. The action set pieces look fairly videogame-y, like the first movie this one will undoubtedly be compared to popular Playstation 3 title "God of War," particularly that big lava guy at the end. But there seems to be more imagination on display for the creatures and, unlike the 2010 film, which was put through a rushed, last-minute 3D conversion, some attention seems to have been paid as to how this stuff will look lunging out at you from your nearby cineplex screen. A couple of shots of Perseus aloft on his pegasus actually bring to mind the original Ray Harryhausen special effects, which is a higher complement than we could bestow on anything in the first film.

Another thing that makes "Wrath of the Titans" at least kind of sort of something to maybe watch out for is that Steven Knight, the brilliant and underutilized screenwriter behind "Eastern Promises" and "Dirty Pretty Things," worked on the script (alongside David Leslie Johnson and Dan Mazeau). Although a reportedly fantastic script for the 2010 film, written by "Raiders of the Lost Ark" scribe Lawrence Kasdan, was submitted but ultimately never used. So that could just be wishful thinking on our part, especially since the director on 'Wrath' is Jonathan Liebesman, who directed this year's demigod-awful "Battle: Los Angeles."

"Wrath of the Titans" rushes into mortal theaters on March 30th, 2012. Watch below, and it's in HD over at Apple.

  1. That wig is fucking terrible, the giants look like they were on loan for Singer's Jack The Giant Killer and that song seems so out of place that my laughter might double as pity…..but being the curious film fanatic that I am (and one of the few people to admit in public that he enjoyed that "demigod-awful" Battle: Los Angeles)…I'll sneak into it after I watch something better before it….
