Fuck “Thor,” “Cowboys & Aliens,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” and whatever other geek movie trailer countdown that happened this month. This is the trailer we’ve been dying to see ever since it started unspooling in front of “Black Swan,” and for us, if the movie news year ended right here that would be fine with us.
How can we even adequately described how stoked we are for this? The spot doesn’t reveal much and really, this one has a plot that isn’t exactly easy to pin down. The long-gestating picture is a drama that ferries between a father in the 1950s (Brad Pitt) and his son Jack (Sean Penn), now grown up decades later and dealing with residue from his childhood. And as was first revealed earlier this year, Pitt’s character is a mean S.O.B. Intertwined in all of this is a larger thematic arc about nature, grace and mysteries of the universe. We’re still picking up our goddamned jaws off the floor so excuse us if we’ll just let you experience the trailer for yourself.
“The Tree Of Life” opens on May 27, 2011. We suggest you take the day off work. Official synopsis the trailer after the jump (or in HD at Apple).
From Terrence Malick, the acclaimed director of such classic films as Badlands, Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line, The Tree of Life is the impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950’s. The film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt). Jack (played as an adult by Sean Penn) finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith. Through Malick’s signature imagery, we see how both brute nature and spiritual grace shape not only our lives as individuals and families, but all life.
I WAS PROMISED DINOSAURS!
But seriously, this looks aces.
Oh come on. What did we expect, of course it was gonna rock the house.
What I\’\’m looking at are the one-sheets – like the masterful one on this post – and what the heezy the cast (and, with grace, the director) will even bother to talk about when they promote this bad boy. Any hints on the release schedule? This can\’t be going wide the first week…
ricardo,
I believe it\’s because Brad fucking Pitt is a goddamn excellent fucking actor. Fuck.
speaking of fucking shit….
FUCK Brad Pitt!
Why the hell is he in every damn fucking movie? I\’m tired of seeing his fucking face all the fucking time. Fucking can\’t even get into a damn fucking movie because his fucking acting face is in it all the fucking face.
Wow! I am sooooo excited for this film!!!
Terrence Malick is my favorite director and \”The New World\” is my favorite film. He is brilliant and this looks brilliant.
Dear Terrence Malick thank you for making such astounding films. Too many dumb tween movies are being made (of course there are other good filsm being made like Rabbit Hole, Inception ,etc.) However your films are magnificent.
Totally fantastic, god bless Terry malick , nobody else could attempt to do anything this ambitious .
It looks amazing, will be there on day 1 when everybody else is at Hangover 2.
@Kevin: the DDT shot is my favorite as well; good call.
Smetana\’s \”Ma Vlast\” seems perfect Malick music. Wonder if this music will have the plot reinforcing tie-ins that Rheingold (The New World) and The Unanswered Question and In Paradisum (Thin Red Line) had.
no words.
My guess is that this film is about the end of the world. Sean Penn\’s character looks like he has the weight of the world on his mind and he knows something bad is about to happen. Throw in the shots of cosmos, Mercury being blasted by the sun, and the only real conclusion can be that Mallick\’s hypothesizing, \”what if all this, all that we know, everything we hold dear…. is about to disappear?\”
Or it\’s a film about Sean Penn whining about his mean ol\’ daddy.
Seems very similar to The Thin Red Line in style and tone. From the dialouge/voiceovers to exact shots like the one looking up between the trees. My question is this though: Will every shot in the film be with a handheld camera? Not that it\’s bad, I\’m just surprised. I love the last line of the trailer so much…\”unless you love, your life will flash by.\” Poetic.
This looks much more involving (on an emotional level) than \”The New World,\” and seems like it\’s going to be an amazing, and very humanistic, journey into father/son relationships and, well, an exquisite look into the meaning of it all (big themes, as always, for Malick).
I cannot wait to see this.
The shot of the kids running into the DDT is a sucker punch to the gut.
I have never been filled with so much excitement and anticipation as I am for this film. Not to build it up any higher than it has, but this could be the film of the century. The Citizen Kane/Metropolis/2001 for the 21st century.
I actually have tears in my eyes&IDK; why…man, this film looks so captivating…
Chills, absolute chills from watching this! It seems silly to say that movies can provide some kind of answer about the meaning of life but it seems like no one except Malick is even attempting to make films on this level. And I\’m so glad to see Brad Pitt in a serious role like this.
Fuck yeah thank you for posting this.
4 1/2 years waiting for this. It has been so worth it. This could change everything. Again.
fuck the tree of life trailer, i\’ve found the real movie event of 2011 :
