It may seem a bit weird that Jessica Chastain is doing what appears to be a pretty low-rent horror movie, but we'd reckon it's another way to get an auteur notched on her belt that already includes names like Terrence Malick, Jeff Nichols, Kathryn Bigelow, John Hillcoat and more. Guillermo del Toro is the producer behind "Mama," which finds Chastain replacing her fiery red locks for a black-haired goth look, and before you see the movie, you can now check out the short that got the ball rolling.
Del Toro himself introduces the very brief movie, directed by Andres Muschetti (who helms the feature too), and well, describing it seems futile when you can just watch it yourself. But it's easy to see why this snagged del Toro's attention. As for the feature, Chastain co-stars with Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, playing a couple who take in some orphaned nieces with sinister results and jump scares. Normally, this isn't up our alley, but Chastain in anything will get our attention, so we'll be tuning in.
Watch the short below and see the movie on Friday, January 18th.
I would see that "low rent horror film" any day over the pretentious and opportunistic "Zero Dark Thirty Hurt Locker 2".
"Auteur" should probably only be reserved for someone like Terrence Malick. Not Jeff Nichols, John Hillcoat or even K-Big (K-19 and Point Break are total auteurist visions)
This looks interesting, but Mama looks terrible.
I'll roll to one of her movies like I'm going to the strip club. *SUPER-CRUNK*
I love how you're obsessed with Jessica as much as I am 😀
