Watch: ‘The Avengers’ Trailer Promises An Exciting Superhero Battle Royale

We have to admit, the opening moments of this trailer had us worried with the ominous BRAAAAHM sound design and initial footage looking like “Rise Of The Inception Battle For Transformers In Los Angeles” but once it settles in, the first full trailer for “The Avengers” makes it look like the film will deliver the goods.

Directed by Joss Whedon, who looks be making the most out of his truly tentpole-sized budget, the story completes the circle of the films in the Marvel universe thus far, with all your fave heroes — Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and The Incredible Hulk (Mark Ruffalo, whose CGI is probably still being finished hence he’s largely absent) — tackling a greasy-haired, but badass-looking Loki (Tom Hiddleston). While our stomachs would normally churn at the rock ‘n roll testosterone treatment (please see the AC/DC soundtracked “Iron Man 2“) in this context, Nine Inch Nails‘ “We’re In This Together (Left)” works very well. All in all, a pretty solid first showing from the movie.

“The Avengers” hits theaters on May 4, 2012. Watch below or in HD at Apple.

  1. No. The problem is that we\’re all starting to get super hero fatigue. And unfortunately for Marvel and Joss Whedon that fatigue is setting in after a summer of non-stop super hero movies. The bigger problem is that my very first reaction to the trailer was, \”Ugh… how many times I have seen this before?\”

This reminds me of the first trailer for \”Kingdom of Heaven\”. After Gladiator, Lord of the Rings, Troy, and the rest it was \”Ugh… I\’ve seen this before.\”

Most likely the film is a hoot. I\’m sure Joss Whedon\’s cooked up something decent. It\’ll have snappy dialog at least. But I think audiences at large are starting to yawn.

  2. To the people complaining the movie looks cheap—you know it doesn\’t come out for another seven months, right? And that hardly any of the special effects have been completed yet? This is just about letting people know it\’s coming, not giving away the whole show. A teaser, as it were.

  3. it does look a little cheaply done, Whats this show? nothing but cars blowing up and all the heroes getting together. really wish Sam L Jackson had a better monologue and wasn\’t cut together with different scene\’s audio.

  4. Wow, \”The Avengers\” trailer really really SUCKED. I was not expecting that. Marvel has excelled at selling/packaging their previous films so well. The \”Captain America\” campaign was amazing. But this… holy shit this was awful. 10 seconds into it my first thought was \”yawn\”. And it didn\’t get any better. The film itself is probably whacky, funny and irreverent. But this trailer was terrible.

I‎\’m also surprised that \”The Avengers\” isn\’t a widescreen film. The cast is ten miles wide when staged and I would\’ve thought that Marvel\’s tentpole film would\’ve gotten the \’BIG SCREEN\’ treatment. I know it\’s a silly thing to nit pick on. But every Marvel film has been widescreen with them all culminating to… flat. Odd. This isn\’t TV or home video, Joss.

  5. Funnily enough, I just heard the NIN song We\’re In This Together for the first time this week. I had never listened to The Fragile before and thought I would give it a shot. Sadly though, this was the only song that stood out. Good use of it here.
