FilmDistrict, the distributor behind upcoming shoot-‘em-up, “Olympus Has Fallen”, has generously released a ten-for-the price-of-one selection of teaser clips to tempt the patriotic moviegoer (stars and stripes feature heavily).
Aaron Eckhart, who returns with his face intact after that unfortunate episode in “The Dark Knight”, looks suitably presidential playing the Commander-in-Chief held hostage by terrorists in the White House. Help is at hand in the form of disgraced Secret Service Agent Gerard Butler, stranded in the Oval Office but armed with a convenient amount of insider knowledge on the place.
“Olympus Has Fallen” comes from director Antoine Fuqua, who, having earned his action stripes with “Training Day” and “Shooter”, is graduating on to meatier stuff. Morgan Freeman captains the second-tier cast as the gravelly-voiced Speaker of the House who stands in as President while the White House deals with its in-house issues. Due for release on March 22nd, the teaser material would suggest this is perhaps not one of 2013’s subtlest takes on the war on terror, but in the absence of the walk-and-talk thrills of “The West Wing”, we could do with a dose of D.C. drama in our lives. The idea that the White House is attacked and destroyed by terrorists is not new to
readers who've read my book 'The Other President'.
