In February, the first trailer for Lorene Scafaria's "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World" debuted, and it's a "world will end in three weeks" story mixed with a darkly comedic tone that quickly pushed the film into our 10 most anticipated indie films of the summer list. Even the soundtrack avoids a heavy dose of melancholy, preferring a bounty of uptempo nostalgia, featuring the hits of yesteryear from the likes of INXS and The Beach Boys. So, you can imagine how curious we might be, now that Focus Features has released two new preview clips from 'Seeking a Friend,' to see if it matches with our enthusiasm. Sadly, they don't.
Perhaps it's the short length of the clips or simply the seemingly random selection of moments represented within, but either way, they do little to match the quirky foreboding of the trailer. The film's story is relatively simple: with three weeks to live, neighbors Dodge (Steve Carell) and Penny (Keira Knightley) head out on a trip to find Dodge's high school sweetheart and Penny's family. The first clip finds the pair on the road, and was likely released to show off Penny's more positive nature, though it isn't particularly humorous or even that eventful.
The second clip is slightly better, showing Dodge at a dinner party hosted by friends Diane and Warren (Connie Britton and Rob Corddry) where his blind date (Melanie Lynskey) talks about her plans for the end of the world. Again, the clip is only a brief moment of what is a larger scene in the movie, with the funnier parts ending up in the trailer, unfortunately.
With a little under a month before the June 22nd release of "Seeking a Friend at the End of the World," there's plenty of time to reveal more impressive moments of the movie. The trailer had several, though we did question whether the film could withstand the weight of such a dark premise laying on top of what Scafaria has described as a comedy. While the sample size of the clips was small, we're hoping the final product is better than what's being promoted.
A third (and longer) clip was released before those two
