The best thing about Paolo Sorrentino‘s “This Must Be The Place” — so far — have been pictures like the one above, with Sean Penn as an aging rocker playing his role with an obvious influence by Robert Smith of The Cure. And while the pictures have been pretty good, this clip/outtake from the film (thanks for the heads up Sven!) is pretty amazing.
Starting off like a behind-the-scenes clip with a film crew very obviously climbing onto a pickup truck to get to their shoot, it soon turns into a montage featuring a music video by Penn’s character’s band — the white make up! the big hair! — that gives way to a montage of various shots from the movie. We’re not quite sure if that’s Penn actually singing or not — David Byrne and Will Oldham are collaborating on the soundtrack — but it seems like he’s lip-syncing to Byrne who’s taking on an affected ’80s goth voice.
Yet, despite all this eyeliner-rimmed hoopla, there lies a much darker story, with Sorrentino’s film centering on Penn’s character who becomes obsessed in tracking down the Nazi criminal who tortured his father. “This Must Be The Place” will play in competition at the Cannes Film Festival that begins on May 11th. Check out the clip below.
Does anyone know how I can see this movie? Where can I access it, rent it, buy it?
sean penn anywhere anytime in anything is great.
hi, the song is \”Every Single Moment in My Life is a Weary Wait\” by italian band \”Nino Bruno e le 8 tracce\”. They have worked with Sorrentino for the soundtrack of \”L\’uomo in più\” (One man up).
My anticipation for this film just shot up ten-fold after seeing this clip. It looks like it\’s going to be something truly unique.
that\’s definitely Will Oldham singing.
I don\’t think that\’s Sean Penn or David Byrne singing. This movie looks incredible and the wackiness factor of a Robert Smith-like rock start hunting down a Nazi war criminal in the American southwest is off the charts! Can\’t wait for this one.
Thank you for posting this, dear, dear Kevin. The film looks beautiful.
