Premiering at TIFF way back in 2011 and arriving in theaters nearly two years later, it isn’t exactly the best indication that “Violet & Daisy” is a winner. But with Saoirse Ronan and Alexis Bledel playing teen killers, and with James Gandolfini popping in for some support, perhaps this will at least be a curiosity worth tracking down.
The directorial debut of “Precious” writer Geoffrey Fletcher, the story follows a pair of teenage assassins (Ronan, Bledel) tasked with what is supposed to be just another quick and easy job, only to find it’s bit more complicated than what they had thought. And then….fantasy sequences? Yeah, seems to be a few different genres being mish-mashed together here and we’re not quite sure it all works, and indeed in our review from Toronto way back when, our man on the ground wasn’t so impressed.
Anyway, give new trailer a spin below and see what you think. “Violet & Daisy” arrives in theaters this June.
I just saw a sneak preview of this film at CT College. It's luminous, humanist and beautifully crafted. You might want to see what Stephen Saito of Premiere said about it. Unfortunately, it looks like your guy tried his best to do a hit job for some reason.
Seems like a film with an identity crisis. The kind of feel-good, "And everyone learns to live" vibe its got going really doesn't mesh with the dark comedy set-up. The surrealism seems a bit tacked on as well. The fact that its taken this long to surface despite being the writer's Oscar follow up doesn't help its cause either.
Looks promising. I wonder how Saorisa will differ from Hanna in terms of her playing a teenage assassin.
Yes, this pic represents something interesting and different from the expected mindlessness of the summer blockbusters. Saoirse will be worth the price of admission alone.
