With Park Chan-wook‘s entire vengeance trilogy getting remade (“Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance” just nabbed a helmer, while “Sympathy For Lady Vengeance” starring Charlize Theron continues to develop), Spike Lee‘s stab at “Oldboy” will be first out of the gate, and likely the most scrutinized. The original is beloved in many quarters, with fans openly wondering how this Hollywood take will deal with some of the darker corners of the South Korean version.
Until we find out, we’ll just have to let the marketing sustain us, as a green band trailer has dropped for Lee’s joint. Stripping the naughtier one of the boobs and blood, this version still isn’t all that different except for a couple of quick new shots, but it does contain the same intensity. As always, we’re tremendously curious to see how it all shakes out.
Meanwhile, Lee is busy in pre-production on his crowdfunded “Da Blood Of Jesus,” which is slated to star Zaraah Abrahams, Stephen Tyrone Williams and Michael K. Williams. And while the film’s plot continues to be under wraps, THR reports that Lee has snapped up Sean Bobbitt, who worked on “Oldboy” and Steve McQueen‘s three films to date, to lens the movie. Not bad at all. Lee is also planning to utilize Sony’s F55 4K digital camera, which is so beyond HD it will melt your face off or something.
Anyway, “Oldboy” drops on November 27th. Watch below.
Update: Trailer removed by request of the filmmakers.
