The last horror film we can really remember making any sort of waves in the film community was April’s excellent “Cabin in the Woods,” which was able to deconstruct many of the genre’s tropes while also affectionately playing into them to great success. Since then there’s been a dearth of things that go bump in the night at the cinema, with the Johnny Depp-starring “Dark Shadows” doing little to excite, and even a few independent features making their way to arthouses or Video On Demand.
Well, hopefully the tide is about to turn, with Sundance favorite “V/H/S” checking in with a terrifying little red band trailer as it makes its way to theaters in the fall. We found it to be “a solidly delivered horror anthology that brings the thrills” when our writer caught it in Park City, and the trailer certainly hews close to that assessment. The found footage conceit doesn’t look too damaging with this one, playing in nicely to the story of a group of thieves hired by an unknown party to acquire a rare VHS tape from a desolate house, though from the looks of things they aren’t exactly getting what they bargained for. At this point, we’re not sure who’s finding all this footage at the movies nowadays, but this writer would be lying if he said there weren’t a few chills to be had from the trailer alone, in which ghastly visions of the supernatural, vampires, and murders abound.
The film boasts an impressive amount of rising genre talent from the independent world, with the likes of “The Signal” helmer David Bruckner, Glenn McQuaid of “I Sell The Dead” fame, indie veteran Joe Swanberg, “House of the Devil” and “The Innkeepers” helmer Ti West, “Pop Skull” and “You’re Next” talent Adam Wingard, and finally the directorial collective Radio Silence. We’ll have to see how “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” fares this week for the genre, but if all else fails, we have “V/H/S” to look forward to when it hits VOD on August 31st, and in a limited run stateside on October 5th (Also, take a look at that cool poster when you get the chance). Let's be honest the trailer is somehow promising. Beside, for once the directors are actually solid ones (even though I'm kinda worried by Bloody disgusting's involvement). Anyway I hope than found footage within found footage won't be the next big thing (I hereby declare FFWFF my intellectual property).
