From the title alone, "Dear White People" is something of a winking provocation, but it says something that writer/director Justin Simien’s film won the 2014 Sundance Film Festival’s Special Jury Award for Breakthrough Talent. Presently riding a wave of buzz to festivals all over the country, not to mention a stop at the London Film Festival, the film is now headed to theaters with a nice red band trailer arriving today.
Featuring Tyler James Williams, Tessa Thompson, Teyonah Parris, Brandon P. Bell, Kyle Gallner, Malcolm Barrett, Brittany Curran, Marque Richardson, and Dennis Haysbert, the movie takes audiences to the campus of a predominantly white college that erupts into a comical culture war. It’s tricky to pull this kind of material off, but it looks like Simien nailed it, getting the tone just right and delivering laughs while not being flippant about the underlying subject matter.
"Dear White People" opens on October 17th. Check out the trailer below, along with a clip and a plethora of promo videos.
