Have we reached Peak Murray? There was a time when Bill Murray was known for being somewhat mercurial, hard to reach, choosy about his projects, and generally following his whims without much fanfare. Now his on-screen and off-screen personas are nearly indistinguishable, with his wise-cracking, grizzled, everyman thing becoming somewhat predictable and popular. Maybe I’m just not ready for mistletoe and chestnuts roasting on an open fire, but Sofia Coppola‘s "A Very Murray Christmas" seems to be maxing out the Murray meter.
A ridiculous slate of celebrities including George Clooney, Paul Shaffer, Amy Poehler, Michael Cera, Chris Rock, Maya Rudolph, Jason Schwartzman, Jenny Lewis, Rashida Jones, Miley Cyrus, and the band Phoenix participate in this holiday special that follows Murray, playing a big star not unlike himself, who is gearing up to mount a live show for international broadcast, only to have a blizzard to throw things off schedule. And so we get to watch the shenanigans ensue within the Carlyle Hotel.
"A Very Murray Christmas" hits Netflix on December 4th. Watch below.
Bill Murray is a national treasure, but this is just Sophia Coppola\’s version of Sinatra\’s Rat Pack in 2015. She\’s assembled her performer friends for a glimpse into their rarefied lifestyles. It\’s on Netflix, not NBC, no one is going to be forced to watch it.
bill murray, like robert downey jr., has somehow gone from impossibly cool to cringe-inducingly annoying
