Madonna has never been one to be cowed by her criticism, and while her latest directorial outing "W.E." has been roundly savaged by critics, she is teaming with the The Weinstein Company and pressing on for some awards season recognition, and hell, she just might get it.
A new trailer for the film has arrived at Moviefone and it makes a major case for the film at least getting some kind of costume nods. If anything — and even the negative reviews have said this — the film looks gorgeous, almost like a fashion magazine come to life. And we mean that in a good way (sort of). Otherwise, the actual parallel storylines about the love affair between King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson, which led to the royal’s abdication, and the 1998-set story of a woman, Wally Winthrop, with romantic problems of her own, in addition to an obsession with the life of the Duchess of Windsor, don't quite seem to mesh. And in the midst of that is a lot of anguished emoting by the cast of Abbie Cornish, Oscar Isaac, Andrea Riseborough and James D'arcy…folks we like, who we hope come out of this okay.
"W.E." has switched gears slightly, and will have an Oscar qualifying run for a week starting on December 9th. But then you'll have to wait all the way until February 3rd to see it a theater near you. Check out the new trailer below along with a handful of new images via ONTD.
The b/w stills look great. Perhaps if she reedited and made it into a b/w silent film like The Artist it would turn out better.
