Got a Tip?

Watch: New Trailer For Long Delayed Thriller ‘The Loft’ With Matthias Schoenaerts, Karl Urban, James Marsden & More

The LoftAt this point, the question is not whether "The Loft" is bad. The question is now just how bad the movie is. Shot in the summer of 2011, the film was originally snapped up by Warner Bros. shingle Dark Castle in 2012. It was given a tentative 2013 release but that didn’t materialize, and then the movie was punted over to Universal, who at one point planned to bring it to theaters on August 29th this year. That didn’t happen either, with the studio pushing it back in June. But it seems like something’s happening with a release, as a new international trailer for "The Loft" is here.

Starring Karl Urban, James Marsden, Eric Stonestreet, Wentworth Miller, Matthias Schoenaerts, Isabel Lucas, Rhona Mitra, and Elaine Cassidy, the thriller is a remake of a 2008 Belgian film about a bunch of bros who rent a loft for their extramarital affairs. But their sweet deal goes bad when a dead body turns up, clues are left in Latin, and everyone starts turning on each other. So yeah, standard potboiler stuff and it looks like director Erik Van Looy, who helmed the original, doesn’t really elevate his material all that much, even with this all-star cast.

"The Loft" will apparently now open on January 23, 2015. Watch below.

  1. Er, the kind of "bad" movie you\’re talking about doesn\’t get "punted over" from one major studio to another. It gets shelved or goes straight to video. A reflection of neither the goodness or badness of The Loft, the so-called "punting" (not really a thing) happened when Exec Producer Joel Silver moved his deal from Warner to Universal. Ultimately Open Road (an excellent indie distributor, scheduled to release Jon Stewart\’s new movie as well as the next Oliver Stone and Barry Levinson films) has come aboard to give The Loft a wide (2000-screen) release in January. See you at the premiere!

  2. I\’ve seen the original Belgian film and despite it\’s typical storyline, it was an incredible piece of work! It has unexpected twists and the finale was so good… I hope the remake will be as good as the Belgian one because if so, I can assure you guys it\’s a must see! So give it a chance 😉

  3. …it looks like the same film, only the actors look younger (except for Schoenarts, who must logically be older and more clever than in the original movie)…

  4. The original, while indeed very potboiler-y, was still pretty tense and efficient, with one rather impressive long De Palma-like sequence in a casino. The remake looks like it will have only small changes from the original, in which case it\’s definitely not a bad movie. Expect an effective little thriller with more class than you\’d expect.
