It’s been three years since Steven Spielberg‘s last effort behind the camera, “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” and we’d rather not talk about it, but it looks like the director is gonna win his way back into our hearts this year twice over. Once, with the sure to be Oscar bound “War Horse” and then again with the pretty fun looking “The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn.”
As you know, the film made a big splash earlier this week when a teaser trailer was revealed to thumbs up approval from around the web. And now we have a new international version, which more or less plays the same but gives us a bit more time and scenes with Tintin’s trusty sidekick, Snowy. We’ve heard some grumbling about how the dog looks in the film, but we think he’s fine and seems pretty naturally integrated along the mo-capped cast.
Starring Jamie Bell, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Toby Jones, Andy Serkis, Mackenzie Crook, Tony Curran, Daniel Mays, Sebastian Roche and Gad Elmaleh, the film hits theaters in Europe on October 26th, before getting a U.S. release on December 23rd (though we expect that latter date to change). Check it out below.

I agree with you: I\’m not sold at all with the motion capture CGI and it would have been perfect in traditional animation…but that wouldn\’t be successful, unfortunately, in these days of 3D and FX drug.
But I was thinking more of the characters, the story, and that special sense of true adventure that we don\’t see on a screen since Indy III.
Oh man, Indy III. What a terrible movie. I like that dryer below complains about Spielberg losing \”it\” after Schindler\’s List, when he was cranking out and/or producing mountains of plastic, formulaic shit for a decade, beginning in 82.
I get that Tintin is considered a valuable property to market overseas, but it\’s a bit like Hollywood took a beloved bit of their culture, digested it, then shit it back on a plate for them covered in Cheez-Whiz and ranch dressing. Bon appetit!
@taptup, of course I know about the world famous classic character of Tintin.
Anyone that is familiar with the elegant, flat coloring and clear details of Herge wouldn\’t recognize anything familiar in this teaser, which attempts photorealism, depicting his characters as plastic toys in a semirealistic world. This objectively seems like the same approach taken in the awful Astro Boy CG adaptation, or any of Zemekis\’ terrible CG mocap movies. There\’s no apparent advantage to this needlessly expensive approach, over, say, filming the movie in live action.
It\’s a disappointing (lack of) stylistic approach, robbing the charm of the source material in a convoluted, overwrought process for no discernible reason.
\”all his movies have lost that sense of childhood wonderment.\”
Because those weren\’t meant to be childlike? God forbid he makes films that aren\’t suitable for the whole family
I\’m psyched to hear a new John Williams score. And actually, between this and War Horse, it\’ll be TWO new John Williams scores by the end of the year.
Crystal Skull nuked the fridge the moment douche-face Shia joined the cast. But Spielberg will deliver the goods this year, and Armond White will die of a multiple orgasm while watching War Horse.
Id be surprised if Speilberg can actually pull this off, the man hasn\’t been the same since he took a sour detour after SCHINDLERS LIST; all his movies have lost that sense of childhood wonderment. just look at AI, MINORITY REPORT & the infamous CRYSTAL SKULL. Its a sad day when Lucas appears the better person in the sand box.
@Brody
People who know a little about Tintin, and see the potential for this movie.
\”Revealed to thumbs up approval\”? All the reaction I saw to the awful teaser was that it looked like more of the same kind of CG corpsemation that Zemeckis has inflicted on us for years…
Seriously, who thinks this looks good?
