“The great thing with a project like ‘Godzilla‘ is that when you’re doing a movie like this that involves a monster that’s so beloved, you suddenly get access to the greatest visual artists out there working today. So I was very lucky in terms of that,” director Gareth Edwards told Bloody Disgusting last summer. “…in terms of designing ‘Godzilla,’ we spent about an entire year just working on that aspect alone. You never quite feel like you have enough time but I wouldn’t change a single thing with the design. I’m so incredibly happy with it.”
And that’s not all he has to be happy with. He’s got a much better cast than this kind of thing usually gets, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston, David Strathairn, Ken Watanabe, Juliette Binoche and Sally Hawkins all featuring, but moreover, this just looks very promising. The first trailer was pretty damn solid, and this new one—well, we’ll let you tell us what you think below.

They got the face wrong, again. . . What is with these clowns? Is it Godzilla or Jake La Motta?
LA2000 makes some good points, but seeing as how Manhattan is an island, and seeing how parts of Manhattan are a maze of skyscrapers, it's quite possible for me to see how one could, in fact, convey the sense of being trapped with a monster in this movie.
Imagine you're stuck on a concrete island, awash in tidal waves and overrun with hysterical mobs of people trying to escape — meanwhile this giant Fing firebreathing unkillable monster is going 9/11 on the entire place. This trailer leads to me to believe there's definitely a way to make a Godzilla movie scary, which isn't something I would have previously thought possible.
We'll see!
It looks like fun and that it will be entertaining. That's really all that matters. Everything else is just extra.

My problem with this movie, which I had with the last Godzilla remake, is that I want Godzilla to win. No offense to anyone from the human race who might end up reading this, but yeah, I want Godzilla to crush humanity and win. Otherwise, this movie is no different from every other 'epic' monster movie where the outcome is a given. Hurray, humanity prevails…yawn.
Love Godzilla. Brings me back to being a child. I always get chills watching these trailers. They always me make dread that I'm gonna look out my window and a giant monster will just rise out of the harbor. Will never tire of Godzilla movies.
It looks as good as one might hope, but I am not convinced that they have managed to overcome the real challenge with a monster movie like this: the lack of "intimate fear".
When you look at the best, scariest horror/monster movies, they involve locking your main character in a phonebooth with a rattlesnake. The more claustrophobic the environment, the better. The fewer places to run and hide, the better. This justifies the fight. The character, who would wisely and gladly run, can't, and as a consequence is forced to get
"up close and personal" with a monster. "Alien" is the quintessential example of this scenario, but you also find it in films as diverse as "The Exorcist," "Jaws," and even the subway tunnel sequence in "Cloverfield" (which I would argue is the only scary scene in that entire movie.)
A creature like "Godzilla" is about scale and grand scenes of destruction, which makes a great trailer, but not a great monster movie. It is virtually impossible to create a scenario where the main character is forced into a primal battle of survival with a creature that large. The "phonebooth" is the entire planet. It is either going to step on you, or not. You are either going to get out of the way, or not. So while on the surface, a "Godzilla" movie is a great marketing exercise and sounds like a fun ride in the abstract, when you get down to the core of what it is, it lacks the elements necessary to make a truly compelling, scary movie.
And unfortunately the trailer does nothing to dispel that notion.
