Is "Jane Got A Gun" the most embattled and embittered film in recent memory? You could say Josh Trank’s “Fantastic Four” or Cameron Crowe’s “Aloha” are contenders for the prize, but the most beleaguered movie is probably “Jane Got A Gun,” the Natalie Portman-produced and shot Western from early 2014, which has since endured numerous release date changes.

The backstory is drama-filled, but the short version is: Michael Fassbender, the original male lead dropped out of the film reportedly because of clashes with original director Lynne Ramsay, whom Portman had handpicked to work with. Shortly thereafter, depending on whom you believe, Ramsay was either fired from or quit the production herself. “Warrior” filmmaker Gavin O’Connor was brought on to replace her and after several false starts with replacements for Fassbender (Jude Law and Bradley Cooper among them), the production finally landed on Ewan McGregor, the cast and crew finally stuck and “Jane Got a Gun” was made.
For all the male fuss, it’s really the rare female-led Western that centers on a woman (Portman) who asks her ex-lover she hasn’t seen in ten years (Joel Edgerton) for help in order to save her outlaw husband (Noah Emmerich) from a gang out to kill him (led by Ewan McGregor). Got that?
Co-starring Rodrigo Santoro and up-and-comer Boyd Holbrook (“Gone Girl”) as part of the gang members trying to track down the husband down to finish the job, the first trailer for “Jane Got A Gun” has finally arrived. And look, onset drama doesn’t necessarily equal a bad film, so give this a shot.
"Jane Got A Gun" opens in France on November 25th and in the U.S. in February via new distributors, The Weinstein Company, who snatched up the movie from the ailing Relativity Media.
