Watch: Meryl Streep Can’t Sing In New Trailer For ‘Florence Foster Jenkins’

Florence Foster JenkinsIt’s a story so good we’re seeing it being cinematically told twice. The tale of a wealthy society woman who performs in concerts, believing she’s gifted with a beautiful, operatic voice, only to be shielded by the truth from those around forms the backdrop of the César award winning "Marguerite" which opens this weekend (our review). But if you want that story told en anglais, with the star power of Meryl Streep behind it, well you won’t have to wait too long.

The Stephen Frears directed "Florence Foster Jenkins" relocates the setting to New York City, and brings together Hugh Grant, Simon Helberg, Rebecca Ferguson, and Nina Arianda, for the dramedy that aims for laughter and inspiration in equal measure. Here’s the synopsis:

The true story of Florence Foster Jenkins (Meryl Streep), the legendary New York heiress and socialite who obsessively pursued her dream of becoming a great singer. The voice she heard in her head was beautiful, but to everyone else it was hilariously awful. Her “husband” and manager, St Clair Bayfield (Hugh Grant) an aristocratic English actor, was determined to protect his beloved Florence from the truth. But when Florence decided to give a public concert at Carnegie Hall in 1944, St Clair knew he faced his greatest challenge.

The film opens in the U.K. on May 6th, but there’s no U.S. date at the moment. Watch below. [Vlicious]
