After the intimate dramas "Like Crazy" and "Breathe In," director Drake Doremus is really swinging for the fences thematically in his upcoming sci-fi love story "Equals," revealing to Buzzfeed last fall that it tackles some very big questions. "…That’s the question that we’re asking is: Why are we, and what are we doing here? What is the point of our lives? What makes our lives worth living? It’s really simple. I think the film answers that in a very simple and hopefully poetic way," he said.
Starring Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult, the story takes place in a future where love has seemingly been eradicated, but when emotions spark between people, they are soon faced with decisions that will affect their lives and everything they’ve ever known. Here’s the official synopsis:
In this gripping and emotional sci-fi romance from acclaimed director Drake Doremus (Like Crazy), Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult play Nia and Silas, two people who work together in a futuristic society known as “The Collective.” A seemingly utopian world, “The Collective” has ended crime and violence by genetically eliminating all human emotions. Despite this, Nia and Silas can’t help noticing a growing attraction between them, leading them to a forbidden relationship—at first tentative, but then exploding into a passionate romance. As suspicion begins to mount among their superiors, the couple will be forced to choose between going back to the safety of the lives they have always known, or risk it all to try and pull off a daring escape.
"Equals" opens on July 1st. Watch below.
sorry but look like a bland and boring movie to me and I don\’t like the two actors
so no for me.
No thanks. Looks like a boring add for medical work clothes.
The visuals look great and I like both actors. Doremus is any interesting filmmaker.
So…"Equilibrium" but less action? I mean I like Stewart and Hoult but dystopian is so dearly overstrung at this point…well the popular version of it. The "Youth Rebellion" dystopian that has been around for the last 5 or so years. I didn\’t even like "Hunger Games" I find the genre so milked which is ironic given one major point of dystopian is controlling people through illusion (Film pretty much has become that). "Snowpiercer" was great but that\’s because it wasn\’t a series or a love story, it showed a really brutal future…and the lead wasn\’t screaming "Peeta" every five minutes. LOL But it\’s a genre that should be done once and awhile, not something done in franchise form.
Oh and "Mad Max: Fury Road" if anyone considers that dystopian (People were controlled by desperation of water and resources so maybe).
This looks interesting to me. This complains about similarities to other movies make me laugh. This is the world that makes superhero movies that repeat the same storyline over and over again billion dollar franchises. So, I don\’t mind that this movie has a similar setting than other films. I can live with that, as long as it\’s the good love story that I think it will be.
I like all the actors involved, so this is a movie I will definitely see. And after two straight months of drama, at work. I think I would love to live in an emotion free world.
This badly done Calvin Klein perfume ad is Rotten on RT, flopped at both Venice and TIFF, and will make a good cure for insomnia when it premieres on DirectTV. Doremus is living off of a minor success several years ago and hasn\’t done anything good since then.

Equals was panned when it premiered at the festival (TIFF) last year…really panned. I wonder if Stewart\’s PR team will pay through the nose to bring the RT rating up from 41%.
Hacks, one and all.
