With the Micheal Brown shooting in August and the subsequent and ongoing protests still fresh, the issue of race relations in America has been back in the conversation in a big way. Bu don’t worry! Hollywood is here to fix everything with "Black Or White."
Kevin Costner and Octavia Spencer lead this facile drama about a cranky, alcoholic, rich white lawyer who is suddenly left to care for his black granddaughter. But trouble arrives when the young girl’s middle class paternal grandmother fights for custody. And so begins a rather insipid look at complex themes of class and race, an experience we summed up in our review as "woefully misguided…painfully quaint and obtuse about contemporary issues."
Co-starring Jennifer Ehle, André Holland, Gillian Jacobs and Anthony Mackie, "Black Or White" kicks off a one-week Oscar qualifying run today (LOL) before opening in wide release on January 30th.
