Based on the book by Rosalie Ham, co-written by P.J. Hogan ("Muriel’s Wedding") and directed by Jocelyn Moorhouse ("Proof," "A Thousand Acres"), the story follows a woman who returns to her small hometown after years away working in classy fashion houses. And her arrival certainly shakes things up:

Based on the best-selling novel by Rosalie Ham, THE DRESSMAKER is a bittersweet, comedy-drama set in early 1950s Australia. Tilly Dunnage (KATE WINSLET), a beautiful and talented misfit, after many years working as a dressmaker in exclusive Parisian fashion houses, returns home to the tiny middle-of-nowhere town of Dungatar to right the wrongs of the past. Not only does she reconcile with her ailing, eccentric mother Molly (JUDY DAVIS) and unexpectedly falls in love with the pure-hearted Teddy (LIAM HEMSWORTH), but armed with her sewing machine and incredible sense of style, she transforms the women of the town and in doing so gets sweet revenge on those who did her wrong.

Co-starring Judy Davis, Hugo Weaving, Kerry Fox, Sarah Snook, and more, "The Dressmaker" opens in Australia on October 22nd. There’s no U.S. date just yet.

  1. In the clip, Liam says he hasn\’t seen her since she was a girl. He must have been two years old when she was a "girl," how would he remember her? I\’ve got nothing against the older woman/younger man dynamic, but was Liam the best they could come up with? He\’s so bland, and he can\’t act. Was he part of some package deal with the Australian Film Board? Make the film in OZ and you must use a Hemsworth or other equally bland Australian actor? Do they have the same agency? He\’s been getting by on his looks alone for long enough.

  2. Age hardly matters, the thing is that they both looking amazing together. Kate is just perfection, she can do anything. Liam is new blood who is really looking amazing as Kate\’s love interest in it. This movie looks really good. Kate is certainly up for her 7th Nomination, either for Steve Jobs or for the dressmaker

  3. Who said anything about the two of them meant to be close in age? The trailer isn\’t trying to make us believe they\’re the same age. It\’s simply showing us that they have a relationship. If you as the audience member can\’t wrap your head around why a younger man is romantically involved with a woman who\’s older than him, you have a problem with your way of thinking. Why is it so easy to accept younger women with older men but so evidently difficult to accept the reverse scenario? Also, are you really complaining about 39 year old Kate having a 25 year old love interest when the roles are usually reversed in Hollywood? This is a refreshing change.

  4. We are living in the same universe that pairs older actors with actresses that are much younger all the time – do you generally have an issue with that?

  5. Liam Hemsworth is young enough to be Kate Winslet\’s son — in what universe are we supposed to believe they are close in age? The production values look great, but his role in this is so unbelievable, what were they thinking? Not to mention, he can\’t act.
